Break Up?by Steveo77zComment: wow, that is an exceptionally well done emotive photo. leaves so may questions unanswered, and thus provides more interes. the ripped up photo further re-inforces the effect, short depth of field leading you to the note works well. |

Stays Leavesby macrothingComment: this photo is pretty ordinary in composition, but the exceptional color quality and high contrast makes the difference. but the upper left and the loss of the lower right detract overall. |

WWIIMonument.jpgby rjksteschComment: ah, this is a complicated one to review, I like a challenge.
I love the lighting, and the clouds in the background. the angle is great, and including the monument in between the two pillars was a small stroke of genious.
BUT: I saw this problem in another photo of yours, and I see it here too. You need to control your f stop. It's one thing to have an extremely short DOF, and one thing to have a very long DOF. A long DOF is what I think you needed here. Not just to get District of Columbia in focus, but also to try to get the monument to "pop" out, as it were. a very short f/ like 2.8 and focus on the white monument alone could also be interesting.
also, you might think about inclding at least 10% ground, everything is just floating in the air here. Message edited by author 2005-11-08 11:27:25. |

Bridge & Streamby rjksteschComment: I'm not sure about the crop on this on either, but overall I don't think that's the central problem. regardless of whatever elements it seems you want to relieve the scene of on the left and right, this image ultimately fails on two levels I think.
one: focus. yes most of it is in focus, but because you used f/5.6 you cannot get everything from front to back in sharp focus. the front edge of the stone retining wall is slightly fuzzy, and thus the viewer loses some detail tha provides a little interest.
two: light. the quality of the light here is very flat. taking this shot at sunrise or sunset would provide a wonderful quality of light, and add much more color to a kind of drab composition.
another suggestion, find a step ladder and take the picture again. yes, you will look like a freak, but that's not the point. this will enable you to see more of the center part of the stream. without being able to see the whole scene, that's the best I can give. Red Tail Hawkby ArpeggioAngelComment: that's impresive to me that you were able to take this, I suppose you might have been in a zoo though... any time I try to get near enough for my camera to get a shot, they take off. |
