Nice macro, but your primary focus is off. Just glancing at the image and assuming a challenge topic, I would go with fractions before I would guess nine. Sure, the nine is prominent is size, but the soft focus leads the eye away from your intended topic and locks it onto the 7/8. I do like the composition, but the nine absolutely needs to be the primary focal point of the image. 5.

9 Up 1 Down

You tackled a pretty difficult subject here. Shooting distant whites on several different focal planes along with harsh, uneven lighting is difficult to pull off with any appeal. As it is shot, you lose too much of your intended subjects to poor lighting, fading focus, and simple obstructions. You did fit well into the challenge topic, but this one needs more attention to execution from the composition and shutter release. 3.

I like your choice of subject here. I have seen several mundane clock photos in this challenge thus far, but yours has a much higher level of interest and creativity. I would, however, like to see this with a better composition. As it is, if feels too centered and unbalance. Odd, I know, but that's what my mind is telling me. I think shooting with about a 20 degree counter-clockwise composition would have given this one a better flow. The imbalance between the chopped face cover on the left and the dead space on the bottom right corner is a bit too much for my eye to overcome. Nicely creative, but I'd like to see a bit better execution. This one scores a 6 from my vote.

This is a very, very common subject and technique on DPC that is often well-executed. This one is lacking in the fact that the sixes are much more prominent in the image than your nines, even though the wonderfully, crisp focus is right where it needs to be. I think a tighter crop would have better accentuated the proper portion of the image. As it is, the background competes far too much with the subject. For the crisp focus and excellent detail, I score this one a 5. Even though this has become one of my least favorite techniques on this site, with a tighter crop I would have scored this one stronger.

I am guessing that I am not the first voter to struggle to find the relation of this image to the Nine challenge. I don't even know what else to comment. 1.

Lemon-Rose '9'... !?

The selective focus works well in your image, but the 9 is very difficult to see right away. I like the muted tones you captured, but the narrow, rectangle crop gives this one an awkward appearance. In addition, it is cropped too much in from the right hand side, nearly touching the lemon. A neat still life, but this one is a definite challenge shoehorn. Even still, with a better crop I wouldn't have hesitated to give it a strong score. As it is, I score it a 4.

Selective desaturation can be a very useful tool when executed effectively. Here, the red of the matchbox seems distorted and out of place. I to like the idea, but, in my opinion, all nine matchsticks should also be in crisp focus. With the challenge subject being nine, I'd like to see the nine clearly distinguished in the image. Here, one item is distinguished, but even that one has some detraction with the red in the matchbox. Definitely some potential here, but this one needs much better execution to grow your score. 3.

I really like the colors you captured here. I would, however, like to see this one with a different composition. Don't get me wrong, I do like this composition, but I think the 9 is too tight in the corner and that the focal plane should be switched for this particular capture. I'd just like to see the 9 more prominent in relation to the size of the frame. Still, I think that this is one of the better images I have seen in this challenge thus far. From me, a 7.

An interesting concept with an even more interesting story I am sure. The crop feels too tight, especially on the left side with the hand touching the frame. The white balance also seems too warm for the capture leaving the skin tones overly orange. i think that this idea had some potential, but as it is presented, it just has the appearance of a snapshot. As it is shot, I give it a 4.

Can you find the natural nine?

Comment:
I do see the natural nine, but it is really lost in the busy frame with many other elements competing strongly for the eye's attention. I think this could have been a really cool subject from a different angle and with a different composition. Nice find, but I wish the image was better executed. 3.
