This has nice composition - I do like landscapes done in portrait mode, but the other comments you've received make some good points, especially as far as garnering votes here. I went looking through your portfolio a bit and the one you should have entered is Colorado river 2 - that one has far more interesting light, and better color and contrast. Definitely some gorgeous locations you've been shooting in!

This looks like something I'd take - I love scenes like this with the shadows and the light and the lines of the trees. I like the curve of the road, too. I suspect it didn't score well or garner many comments because it's plain - there's no spark, so to speak. Of course, when you're actually there, it's a lot different and that's hard (for me, anyway) to translate into a picture. One thing you could try (and I'm still not entirely all for it, but it has it's uses) is HDR processing. If you shot it in RAW, you can do it from a single image.

You did a great job with the gradient map - really adds life to this. I agree with your sentiment about her looking out over the water - the composition you chose is a powerful one. I also like how the distant shore is blurred, which accents the sharpness of the water and the silhouette. Nice capture and very nice editing! (And very nice score and finish, too.)

The thing I find most interesting about this (other than Bucket's comment, which is a story unto itself) is the fact it exists somewhere. That there's a store somewhere - undoubtedly a small one - where customers' pictures hang next to the TicTacs. Very smalltownish in a very non-smalltownish world.

I do like what Julie did for the sky but you have to be careful with that in a challenge - essentially you'd be adding an element that's not there. I also like Falc's suggestion to give it a bit more room on the left, though it does work for me the way it is.

Holy cow, that's a perfect 5.0000! Kind of a miniaccomplishment on it's own. I thought this a nice, well composed shot when I viewed it in the challenge. I love the light, and wished the bug had crawled just a wee bit more into it - maybe half in and half out. Composition is very nice and I like the muted colors, especially in the background.

I'd never have known you tinted the background - it looks perfectly natural to me which means you did a great job not only applying a tint, but picking the right one. I'd never even have thought of that. To me, it's just a little soft - I'd normally suspect camera shake (that's my problem) but I see you're using an IS lens. May have been just a bit of movement by the birds themselves. But soft isn't always bad - often it's a matter of taste.

I thought this was a delightful shot! I now know what you were talking about with the focus, but it's not that much off and the shot as a whole is really, well, delighful! In fact, the slight out of focus lends to the kitten just happening to wander into the picture concept. The colors are excellent, the whimsical nature of the hat with the red rose sitting on the vase is wonderful, and the painting on the wall really tops it all off. AND you have three favorites!! This, by my definition, is a successful Free Study entry.

I think Don liked it. Excellent image for the challenge and just a darn nice image on its own. I trust that's a mall I cannot afford to visit.
