Comment:
Stands out from the crowd for several reasons. It's not overtly about grand architecture, but it sure is all about man's relationship with his (man-made) city habitat, and I'll prefer that every time. The use of light is masterful, and there are plenty of small but important details to add spice to the pot; the No Standing sign, the portentous number over the doorway, the harsh steel grille on the window, the descending entry steps, the papered-up display window, and of course the despairing and lost human figure. Fabulous composition. Beautifully processed too (although I'd very probably have still admired it even if the post-processing was crap). 9.

Very modern photograph (aside from the border, which is best forgotten). The deployment of the people is brilliant; you couldn't have arranged them better if you had posed the whole thing (which you clearly did not). The man in jeans and the man with the trolley, on the right, are beautifully balanced by the opposing corporate pair (one a suit, one a portrait) on the left. And there's a stylish pair of ladies approaching from the rear; will they also diverge and take separate paths as they get closer? Clever and original depiction of contemporary architecture/people interface. 8.

One of the two best photographs I've seen of the Brooklyn Bridge (the other is here too, by JPR). This one seems to beautifully convey the structural character of the bridge; the mixture of science and artistry that makes this fabulous structure work. Essential, sympathetic photograph. 8.

Full of energy

Beautiful. There's some irresistible element of anthropomorphism about this building; it seems wilfully malevolent. Of course it's partly the brooding angle and partly the severe, deep-space-bronze processing, but the effect is absolutely striking. You have captured the building as an emotional presence rather than as a utilitarian construction. 10.

Oh, yes. It's everything except welcoming, isn't it? I deeply admire this sort of photograph; it's so much harder to find, capture and process than it looks. Architecture for masochists, maybe? Bravo. 9.

Water and Light

This is in Lansing, I think? The almost cartoon-like level of colour saturation is effective here; it gives the building an energetic character and presence entirely consistent with its function. The chosen exposure has also transformed the water into a surreal baseboard for this lovely (art deco?) industrial building ... makes it look a bit like a model rather than the real structure. Clever & thoughtful work. 8.

A Frank Gehry Masterpiece

Unlike many Frank Gehry designs, this one doesn't look like it's caught in the act of falling down. This photograph is a very fine tribute because I imagine it depicts exactly what M. Gehry had in mind when he designed the building; soaring, concentrated, and just a little bit organic. And a celebration of form over function, of course. 7.

Land Line

Such a good eye you have! This is charming and witty, as ever. It has five major elements and it would not work without any one of them. Plus it has many minor elements, every one of which contributes a pleasing if whimsical note or two to the performance. Bravo!
