City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia, Spain.by bob_bobskiComment: What's this doing just floating around in your portfolio untitled, non-categorized...hidden away. ???
Very nice photo. The reflections in this work very well as is...I can't imagine how this would look on a still morning!
Pretty cool. Where is this? |

Humming bird at SF.JPGby bob_bobskiComment: Hey! I like how you caught this little fella sitting still. :-) Very good detail and the DOF works quite well. You could put several captions to the "face" - "Whadda you want?", "Are you done yet?"... |

Musical Enjoymentby taylorpageComment: I like the object isolation, but this would be more convincing if the fingers were actually holding a chord. |

little jackby tnunComment: What's he looking at? Why's his tail wagging (love the hint of motion BTW)? There's a story here. That's the first thing I think of. Then I want to know what he looks like but I'm bummed because as the viewer I'll never know.
I do like how the lines in the pavement/sidewalk radiate out like they are pointing to the main subject. The diagonal that the dog is on adds tension (in a good way) to those.
Could be a tad underexposed? Overall, it's "ok", but one that probably was moved along fairly quickly during voting.
All JMO of course. :-) |

Moonshiner's Side Businessby karmatComment: High contrast, cold (rhododendrons tell me that), busy, interesting...all first impressions.
Love the title. I've seen several places like this along the Shenandoahs here in Virginia. Love to stop when I can as you never know what "treasures" you might find!
You know what pulls me away in this photo? The powerline in the bg. It's a thick white line that just jumps out no matter how much I try to avoid it.
What was your primary subject? The building, or the sign? I ask because your choice of aperture puts the sign squarely in focus, and teases with the building (not OOF for just bg, not sharp enough for comfortable viewing). Tough choice for sure. Go deeper and you bring in more "things" like branches, etc...go shallower and people will say they want more. Hmmm. Maybe you did make the correct aperture selection after all. :-D
Now you've made me want to take a road trip! He-he. |

Londonby figaroComment: B/W was certainly the way to go with this and you have a nice tonal range overall. The strong side lighting makes this photo work. You couldn't have pulled this off a couple hours later. This lighting provides some detail in the shadows and nice highlighting. Did you notice the camera ladies shadow is interrupted by the floor drain? :-)
The archway helps contain this in a natural frame; even the sign post in the background helps, in that it directs the viewer to the double-decker bus in the background. That in itself identifies the place for most viewers, giving this some additional context.
Busy, busy, busy...hustle & bustle, with so many people milling about. The foreground man moving into the image adds a sense of urgency. Yet, the gal with the camera says this is some place special and time stands still for a few in the moment.
Nicely seen and captured. Good story telling! :)
ETA - I just noticed that this shot only had 2 comments during the challenge period. Guess there was too much to take in during the short look each photo is given during the voting stage.
I usually don't read other comments prior to making mine. Don't like to be unduly influenced. :) Message edited by author 2008-02-08 11:23:57. |

Water Dancerby AliciaComment: The first thing I catch when viewing this is the wingtips just touching the sand. Then the presence of the reflection and it's resulting odd circle. Isolation of the subject, via high contrast, works very well.
That's my first impression.
Then to get critical, after all this is DPC right?...I notice some other things, good and ok. The birds shadow. I missed it at first. Adds another element of interest - that's good. :) The birds feet outstretched behind in flight. Didn't catch that initially, but it adds in giving a sense of urgency and timing to the capture. The sand, the water, the pelican, all worked to tell me this was taken at the shoreline...the washed out lapping water in the bg confirm that upon further review (doesn't add nor take away). Yes, the bird is a tad blurry in spots (mostly motion blur? on the leading wing) - would the image be stronger if the entire bird was spot on...yes, but it doesn't entirely kill the photo because it's not.
All JMO of course. Nice capture overall. |

up before sunsetby desertoddityComment: I like the lines that the edge of the mountain creates. The color of the mountains against the blue sky also works well.
The primary subject to me is the moon. That's the first thing that gets my attention. The mountain hillsides are quite busy and there's nothing to lock onto...so to the moon I go. :) Problem is, the moon seems oversharpened and gives it an almost artificial look, like it was cut & pasted in from somewhere else.
While some may say that the image is too compositionally centered, I think it adds some balance. If the moon had been higher in the sky, then I may have considered cropping to remove some of the lower half of the photo.
All JMO of course. :-D |

DSC_4106 copy2.jpgby picturesbykimComment: It certainly has a mysterious quality/feel to it. Something you might see for the bg of a movie DVD cover or something. Might be some room to play around some with PP variations. |
