Looks like one of those construction rental sites. It's an interesting image compositionally. On the technical end of things it seems substantially underexposed.

Steve - I didn't vote this one very high. Reasons: Lighting is a bit harsh, the bird is uncomfortably too close and in your face (as a viewer), and being that Eagle head shots are done with frequency here at DPC the bar is placed quite high.

Steve - I didn't vote this challenge and honestly hadn't even looked thru the entries...

At first glance this photo made me smile - it's infectious I guess. :-P

Regarding the pig being a candy dispenser? I had no idea and thought it was a piggy bank. The "poop" in the background looks too large and round IMO to simulate the real thing, and may have more impact a bit closer to the pig (but then you'd throw the balance off a little I suppose).

In the end, too much thinking required for some to grasp the concept in the hurry thru and vote mentality.

All JMO of course. :-)

This is a fun piece of work for sure! I like it the way it is, but do wonder if you mirrored the shot on the right it would look like < Fire Escape >

First Impression

The VERY first thing that came to mind when this image came up for me during voting was "I've seen this before". Don't know if that impacted anyone else or not, but it's worth noting that sometimes using the same material in back-to-back challenges can possibly work against you.

I think the subject material does work well for a Free Study, and your title fits it quite nicely as well.

Technicals

Compositionally, it's "ok" for me. The angle works for added drama. I would have liked to see the feather/quill positioned somewhat differently. The tip is running at the same angle as the bg and makes the viewer run right out of the bottom corner of the photo. Maybe if the feather was going more across the book allowing the tip to slow down the flow out of the image and at the same time giving the texture of the feather part more emphasis? Just thinking out loud here. :-)

The lighting and tone of this photo is right on the mark IMO. It feels much richer than the one you put up for Still Life. Focus and DOF are appropriate and work well. Minor nit is the few pieces of debris near the book on the bg material...

Overall it's a nice piece of studio work.

Take care.

If this photo had no title, would you think of "Friends" as a possible subject theme? Hmmm...ok, maybe. I like cats (have two) and can understand how "she" is your friend - but still feel like you've relied too much on your title. All JMO of course. Good luck!

I knew he was pouring something out of that cup. You could tell by the look on his face in the other photo.
