re-visiting my faves...

this is another image that i immediately latched on to upon discovering the dpc galleries. of course, i was taken by the iamge--it is killer! but, what is more important to me is the lesson it offers in looking for potential in the world around you.

by day, this shot would barely register as a boring postcard (well, maybe a bit above--the curve leads nicely to the wave-like horizon--if the skies offered something). but instead of simply treating it like the 1000s and 1000s of others who pass this way, mark saw the potential in what the vista could offer with the proper lighting. granted, he may have gotten lucky with the skies, but, all the same, he had a vision of what he could capture, and just look at the result! stunning!

this image is a great reminder that not only should you always be looking while you are out and about, but you should also be asking yourself, "how would that or that look with a different light?" there is no limit as to what you may capture if you learn to slow down your eyes.

thanks for a great lesson!

re-visiting my faves...

this was the first of about 80 images that i grabbed as faves when i discovered the galleries. i am still blown away by the depth and quality of images found there--this is just a great example of that.

what i was looking for were examples of images that were basically flawless in the execution to the extent that i would have have the following reactions:
"wow"
"that is really cool"
"damn, i would like to try that"
"they make it look so simple"

when i was growing up, my dad taught me that the best haircut is one where nobody can tell you had a haircut. as with anything, the best work is that where you immediately appreciate the end result, and that you only notice details (and/or flaws) later. this image is one of those. expertly envisioned and captured, well worthy of emulation. and, one of these days, i'll take a crack at it ;-)

re-visiting my faves...

this was my 2nd fave, and i love it as much today as the first time i saw it. the first thing that struck me was "how clever!" the concept of 'freedom' was instantly communicated.

granted, in the past year, i've come to know and love not just shannon's work, but his work ethic. he is a great example of setting your sights on a goal, and relentlessly pursuing that goal, until you achieve it. as a result, not only has his photography and ability to translate his vision into photographic images strengthened, but he has been recognized as one of dpc's valued assets. not bad for someone who professes not to even know what the ROTs were prior to dpc...

there are two other things about this image that really hit home: one is its visual simplicity, the other is just how much work it took to make it happen. granted, shannon's professional experience has taught him 'attention to detail' (well, i'm sure that getting smacked in a few challenges helped a little, also), but when you compare the difference between what he has rendered with a simple household object to what many people do with the toys around their homes, you can learn a lot about the art of presentation.

i'm not suggesting that everyone has to spend hours and hours trying to perfectly polish a table or building a set or painting a driveway, but, all the same, if you want what shannon's got, he's given you a pretty solid roadmap.

thanks, shannon, and congrats on your being named to the SC!

definitely one for the scrapbooks. she'll probably want this to be a poster to hang behind her dorm room door.

not sure about the title, but this is great find, nicely seen. like the treatment, as well. the interplay of light, lines, and shadows is fairly captivating. good work.

ok, when this popped up in the random photo thread, i thought i recognized it, but was looking at it as a standalone image (as opposed to a challenge entry). my initial reaction was "interesting colors, but a little too in-your-face, without enough detail to be able to come to terms with the subject comfortably." so, if that is what you were after, you succeeded. if you just wanted to see how close in you could get and still have something in focus, you succeeded there, as well. and if you were experimenting with color and bokeh, you also did well.

as far as a challenge entry goes, i scored it a 4. i didn't think it met the challenge very well, nor did i find it that appealing or interesting. if it hadn't been so centered, i probably would have scored it a 5. but, as it was, i didn't see anything more to hold my interest.
