Interesting study. If there was any way that you could have used an aperture that woul dhave allowed more sharpness through the image (or if you could have backed away farther and zoomed in) then this would be a stronger image.

I think that this is an interesting use of the medthod of inverting. Good DOF and good composition. Nice to see something different.

I believe that oversharpening may have been a problem with this image. Next time, use less amount or more threshold if you were using Un-Sharp Mask.

I enjoy the detail in the candle. The highlights of the flame are a ilttle bit too blown out for my taste.

Howdy from the Critique Club!

Been getting some CC's from you and whattaya know but i get to do yours!

As for this shot---well, you really achieved the cuteness factor! What a fuzzy, cute subject! This one is a great model and would be fun to work with. I really like how you included the pumpkin in this shot. Even though it is obviously a fairly small pumpkin, it still seems to tower over your subject, giving it even more of an emphasis on the helpless expression that your subject portrays. The leaves also add a good sense of the season and balance with the pumpkin well.

As for criticism, this is what i have: I feel that you might have slacked off when it comes to editing this. I think that a clean black background would have lessened the distraction from the subject. Using the cloning brush and the levels tool, you could have easily made a seamless background out of this. I also feel that you could have clones out some distracting debris in the bottom right part of the image as well as on your backdrop.

Compositionally, i feel that there are a couple of problems. Firstly, I feel that both the top and the bottom of the image seem to have been chopped off. It is a little bit too crowded at the very bottom and I feel that there needs to be some breathing space above the pumpkin stem. The placement of the kitten is right on though as well as its pose.
Lastly, I believe that there might be a slight blue cast to the image which again could have been fixed in the post-editing process.

Overall, I find this a charming and very cute image. I feel that it was underrated, but I also do believe that some of my suggestions may have helped out the image. Still a very good and modest submission. I personally rated it an eight purely by the way it made me feel. Whenever a photograph truly makes me feel a way, then to me it must be a very good image. Thanks for submitting and also for commenting on my images :).

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to contact me. Hope this CC wasn't TOO long!!!

Thanks,
Lee

Greetings from the Critique Club
Hey Ken...I know this is a bewlow average shot from you and I can see you kicking yourself for not doing somethings with it. I understand why you did submit it though---its a very unique image in this challenge and the title is very appropriate.

The composition is well done, using good diagonals. The focal point is the line of fishermen, but it unfortunately is out of focus. The image seems to have suffered from slight camera shake which really detracts from the shot. If you could have found a more interesting angle to express your idea, it may have scored higher.

As far as this photo itself...what i see you doing to make it better is to crop out all the way from the right until the cars are out of the shot. Losing a couple more of the fishermen is worth the crop to me. Also, an aggresive application of USM would have made it a sharper image.

Everyone gets these shots occasionally so just move on and keep submitting :).

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to PM me.

Thanks,
Lee

Greetings from the Critique Club

Hey, Justin. I think that this image is very well done both technically and compositionally. Unfortunately, I do think that i loses some of its impact due to the small size of it. As most of your comments stated, the size was a little bit too small for people to get an accurate understanding of exactly what was going on in the shot.

BUT DONT LET THIS DISCOURAGE YOU M'BOY! :) Keep submitting...but try to make the shots a little bit bigger as your camera is more than able to make a 640 pixel sized shot. If you need help resampling, you can view the Tutorial about it or give me a PM.

So go out there and take some more shots. If you are in Tibet, DPC viewers and voters will be more than eager to see a part of the world that we rarely get a look at and that we don't understand.

Lastly, I think this shot is slightly underexposed, although I could se how the blown out candle flames could be a problem. So my advice to you would be to just try again. Good diagonals btw---really strengthens the composition.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to PM me.

Thanks for submitting---looking foward to seeing more from you,
Lee
