Crisscross by markwileyComment: Dizzying, intricately ordered image. The neatest aspect of the picture is that the central building hardly changes as it morphs from color into black and white. The entire transition is modest and cinematic. The roads and tracks smoothly lead into each other from one version to the other. Beautifully integrated. |

reversedby TiberiusComment: What I find provocative here, and maybe I'm fooling myself, is that the black and white version seems sharper than the color version. More contrasty, too. Kind of reverses the expectation that the seeming present is more at hand than the past, as we tend to view black and whites. Also, the sense of the cyclist fleeing into his own time is engaging.
Rewarding image. |

Follow the yellow leaf trailby PaulComment: Lovely transition, carried by the woman's insouciant air. She treads that narrow path into the camera. The colors of the scene on the left are subtly luscious, especially the reds and blues. She can hold her own in any world she chooses. |

Grasshopperby rozComment: Another beauty. The grasshopper seems to be woven of life itself, worthy of an entire career's study. What's marvelous in the black and white is the disappearance of green, more so than the fade out of browns. The forms of the grasses now come into their own, the bokeh like northern or southern lights. The grasshopper is now camouflaged and serene. That's putting quite a spin on it, but I'm on a roll.
Fascinating. |

day 3by jmritzComment: What a wonderful choice of image, and how startlingly strong it turns out to be. This silhouette with highlights is a solid bulk of a being, with a few brushstrokes, so to speak, capturing dimension and mysterious character. Kind of like a statue. The background colors alone could make a noble flag. Very impressive.

Face to Face by mariucaComment: A fascinating appraisal across time. The man, elderly and almost biblical, seems to reflect on his life in different eras, marveling almost on who he really is. The processing of the black and white to age it is crucial to its fullness, and adroitly managed. The setting is simple enough to work in both time periods. A mesmerizing image.

The Magic of Veniceby MargaretNetComment: Like many of the wonderful entries, this image plays with time. Black and white will usually feel older. It's a beautiful scene, magical is this light. Admittedly, I'm drawn to the color version, but must keep in mind that the black and white version in actuality, assuming a real shift in time, was also in color. It's getting confusing. But it's fun to imagine having such a choice, hopefully not irrevocable. And, oh, did I mention that this photo is really beautiful?

A morning of baking by markwileyComment: My favorite take on baking a pie. The hyper-real overhead view puts the viewer smack in the middle of the process. It feels like I'm working along with the baker. And I want my slice! |
