Well, the color should give a hint to the name origin ... a like the real contrast between the subject and the background -- makes it really stand out.

I like the way you've maintained the saturation on the petals. I tried to shoot some of these last week but they were too washed-out to be useful.

If you use the title you've printed on the layout you should get more search-result hits ... ;-)

I am amazed at the aperture, ISO, and shutter speeds you employ.

Thanks!

I confess I don't pay much attention to the aperture setting -- I prioritize ISO first because my camera sensor is so noisy, then shutter-speed to (usually) minimize the blur. I let the camera set the aperture, unless I have a composition where it's essential to control the DOF more than the noise.

In the case of this dandelion, I had some slack in the shutter-speed because of bright, late-afternoon sunlight. If I had seen how this would come out -- I was in the parking lot on my way home from work -- I might have opened the aperture more to further blur the fence, though that might also have made the foreground too OOF for some folks.

The dark area (looks magenta-ish to me) in the very center comprises the actual reproductive parts of the flower -- the dried "petals" around the outside are just protective leaves.

There seemed to be a consensus that a tighter crop would help, so here is one:

That said, this is supposed to be a landscape shot with a point of interest, not a bug macro. To me, it's more interesting the amount of detail you can make out if you really look, even from several feet away.

It's sharp enough -- I try to err on the side of undersharpening, as I really dislike the halos you get when it's overdone. Your edges are distinct, as are the color "veins" on the petals -- I think it's fine. Remember you have a shallow DOF and not all of it can be sharp anyway.

I like the somewhat odd color combination; from the thumbnail it looked almost like you had flames for a backdrop. :-)

Two bees or not two bees -- yes you've got 'em here! In the thumbnail view, the composition and tones reminded me of a cascading waterfall ... very nice overall.
