As I mentioned, the graininess in the BG was intentional, to emphasize the difference between the structure and the surroundings, which are actually very blah otherwise. I "later" thought this might look good in a duotone.
I did get one shot later of blocks tumbling, but there was no "composition" to it. These were shot in a museum, so avoiding other people and exhibits is tricky. This one was composed by "dead reckoning" with the camera lying almost flat on the table -- no using either the LCD or the viewfinder. |

Liquid Lensesby GeneralEComment: Originally posted by mosall: Overall I love this photograph. I feel the lower 1/3 of the photo is distracting. |
Yes, this seems to have been a common feeling about this shot. After it was submitted, I tried desaturating the only the foreground to try and emphasize/focus on the water on the edge of the rocks.

Colores de la Fantasíaby yankoComment: Supposedly this was "simple" to do (in the original) but it looks impressive anyway -- nice job. |

Cast Of Thousands?by GeneralEComment: Originally posted by Claya: Think focus at front would have worked better. |
I agree, my Oly does a lousy job selecively focusing on the foreground, and I have no manual focus option -- macros are always a challenge.
For those who thought it was just dirt, these are earthworm "castings" or excreta -- one of the most important components in the constant recycling of nutrients. I believe it is estimated that most of the topsoil found in the world today has passed through the intestines of at least one earthworm ... |

A Safe Subjectby GeneralEComment: Originally posted by e301: Interesting idea, pretty neatly executed - almost pulls off that effect of seeming to be sunk into the screen - however there's a slight tilt to things - whether real or the result of some illusion, it's enough to disturb the impact of this shot for me - the more disturbing perhaps, for being so slight? |
Yup -- I shot it in a bit of a hurry and didn't get quite as squared-up as I thought. I actually did a slight perspective correction (on the left, not the top), but I'm not sure if it was helping or hurting things. |
