I NEVER Get To Be Super Mario!by GeneralEComment: Originally posted by dahkota: First impressions: glad that you kept this in color. I like the composition except for the chair in the second boy's face - he has a moustache. Sharp but with a few blown spots. Interesting, but not much of a story. |
Yes, the moustache is the entire point of the composition and the title.
For those who don't know, The Mario Brothers are extraordinarily well-known characters from kid's video games -- Mario Teaches Typing is a popular piece of educational software found in many elementary schools.
The Mario Brothers are readily identified by their luxuriant black moustaches ... |

Fade Outby GeneralEComment: Originally posted by pineapple: That is a lot of work for a (------- note to myself, complete at some future date -------) photo. |
I agree, but this is a learning site, and I was experimenting with something new. Not all experiments have to be "successful" in order to learn valuable information.
Isaac Asimov makes this point in an essay called "The Light That Failed" about the Michelson-Morely Experiment -- an experimental failure of such spectacular proportions that it won the experimenters a Nobel Prize.
Sorry, I meant to post the links for the original and a shot of the setup:

Boats-3.jpgby judojoeComment: This one puts the focus on the boats -- I think the rich colors are mostly OK and really divide the photo into horizontal zones, though the busy-ness and harshness of light on the foliage is a little much. I would probably experiment with masking off the background area and try some things to reduce its dominance -- lightening, darkening, blurring, etc. Or maybe just crop some away and leave a panoramic crop ... |

Boat-1.jpgby judojoeComment: As much as I myself like showing the "whole picture" in this case I think that bit of sky really pulls attention away from your main subjects. Also, I wish this was framed just a bit to the left so that the prow of the farther boat could be seen more distictly and not look cut off. |

"Everybody, Remember Where We Parked!"by C_Steve_GComment: I just ran across this picture in a thread, and noticed it was similar to some I've taken, then I noticed you're from Sonoma County where I was born.
Yeah, this should have scored better. I probably would have tried making it more "abstract" by making it a near-silhouette using Curves or Levels or something -- and probably getting the lights to turn psychedelic or something : ) |

Containedby RetroesqueComment: That's a very interesting shot. It might be worth a return visit to zoom in and focus on the seagulls. |

Gavin James Davisby BakerBugComment: Very nice picture, but before you make prints, I think it would look "better" (if less "accurate") if you take out the catchlights on his nose. Message edited by author 2007-06-08 00:06:01. |

Wild Oat Grassby stevieianComment: Looks more like wheat than the oats I'm used to seeing, but a nice shot regardless of what kind of cereal it is. |
