I'm not a huge fan of the flare/washed out scene, but I think if you're going to use that style, it would work well to have a less visually cluttered scene. Her hair is lit nicely and the detail on her is preserved well, so I'd like to see less of the trees/foliage crowding her out.

This is a well taken photo, but it seems incredibly random and I don't quite get what's going on in the scene itself. It's incredibly non-sequitur, like there is a subtext that is utterly missing.

For me, at least, an essence is more the bit below the surface, not a pile of stuff. I would have scored it much higher if there was more than just an accumulation of things, perhaps if they were in a more telling spot, for instance. Having said that, it seems to be a shortcoming for the overwhelming majority of entries, so I might be a bit harsh with this expectation.

Surprised you didn't get any comments on this one, Joe. I think it's a great candid capture. The slide going through the head is a bit unfortunate, but it's hard to think about that when you're shooting, as well.
