Bad Choices

I found this a really unpleasant child shot. She looks like the Bad Seed in this, sorry to say. I'm sure she is a very cute kid, most are, but this is a case of bad editing on the photographer's part. By editing, I don't mean in PS, but just in what pictures you choose as the best of the bunch. I find the highly desaturated colors make this look creepier. It's not a bad composition except for the overexposed section of her calf that shows in the corner of the frame. The shadow behind her (from the use of direct flash, I imagine) is also a bit distracting, especially in contrast with the weird pastel colors.

I thought this was a genuinely charming candid of the two dancers. The grin and raised eyebrows on the left girl are priceless. Don't let them read this comment (if they are your kids) but I think it is quite revealing that the chubbier (sister) has only one ice cream in her hand while the more fit one has two. She also has a much more hesitant, shyer expression. This photo really went beyond the challenge for me.

After reading a few of the other comments, I am amazed that people could not immediately see the choice was 'which kind of icecream'. Good lord! Have they never stood outside an ice cream truck, vending machine, parlour.....?

I really liked this, in spite of the tacky border. An image like this is bound to impact a segment of viewers negatively, regardless of the quality. I thought it was quite a decent street capture and the flag is in good focus. Since I took that to be the main subject, I had no issues with the slight motion blur of the flag-carrying skater and the more extreme blur of the onlookers. If I was going to take issue with anything it would be the cars in the background but those can be blurred out in PS. A fun shot that made this challenge a teeny less boring.

Life or Death Choice?

This does represent a choice. It's kind of a bizarre way of showing it, IMO. It took me a minute to figure out that the stuff in the bottle is some kind of euthanasia. I could say this would be more effective if you eliminated the distracting background but, honestly, I think this set-up is too contrived to make an appealing photo. It didn't move me at all, except that the kitten is cute.

Just wanted to let you know, this shot got a 7 from me (who had a picture of an empty bench which placed even lower, ;-D). I thought this was a great shot and totally conveyed the idea of waiting.

I was browsing through the favorite photos of one of my favorites (jbeguin) and I came across this. The models are beautiful and you've captured great expressions. I really like how the boy is partly in darkness. He is looking away, at neither the photographer or the girl, while she has her arms around him, almost possesively, looking directly into the camera. I'm not sure if this photo says anything to me about trust, or the lack of it, but I sure like looking at it.

I gave this a 6. It should have done much better than this. The placement of the girl in the center was well-considered and works wonderfully to draw your eye into the scene she is viewing. The motion blur of the skaters adds excitement and the skaters in the distance and the folks waiting on the benches add to the depth of the scene. I think the reason I didn't score it higher was I thought there was a bit too much blurring of the wall in the foreground. If you cropped some of that (just a tiny bit) the girl would be dead center and the shot would really be fantastic, IMO. As i is it's a really cool and interesting shot. You should be proud of this one.

I think the advertisement and the guy waiting with his arms folded is what makes this. It's all a bit blurred but I like it anyway.
