Daisy chainedby MelethiaComment: What a pretty pic! Sorry I never got to vote on it - I gave up halfway through because I got sick of staring at chain macros... |

Well Usedby splidgeComment: Greetings from the Critique Club.
I gave this image a 5 during voting. Technically it's a good image - nice composition, nice depth of field, interesting texture, nice use of the rule of thirds. My biggest objection would be that it completely lacks originality, given the challenge theme. The interpretation is literal, the title is obvious (though at least you didn't call it 'the weakest link')
Things you could have changed to improve the image: focus on the very front of the chain on the left hand side, then use a greater DOF (say f5 or something), so that the front of the chain is very sharp, then fades into the distance.
Things you could have changed overall: taking a picture of something other than just a chain.
Nice picture, but I've seen too many like it in the same place, sorry...

Macro Linkby neophyteComment: Greetings from the Critique Club.
I gave this image a 6 during voting, which should actually be seriously flattering - I was downmarking pretty much all just chains images on the basis of lack of originality, and the ones that had matching titles like 'chains' or 'linked' were particularly grating on me, on the basis of both lack of originality and absence of imagination... Therefore it's a sort of miracle of life that this one got over 5 from me.
What I think really makes it work is the simplicity of the composition - there's something very graceful about the minimalism of it. And it's got that lovely curved diagonal shape that a number of your images seem to have, which really works for me, I find it very elegant. The bokeh works very well, and the background is good - the shadows are interesting, but without distracting from the main subject. The light is nice, the texture is good.
It's quite sharp, but probably not as sharp as it could be. Also, I find it slightly too close up - I would have liked to see the same curve, but from slightly further off, so that more of the links in the chain are shown.
So yeah, overall a nice image, but I do wish the subject matter was more original.

Ol' Rustyby ShamanComment: Greetings from the Critique Club.
I gave this image a 4 during voting. It's not that there's any one thing specifically wrong with the image per se... It's just a bit dull. Taking a picture of a chain for the 'chains' challenge is the most literal interpretation you can think of, the title is unimaginative, and it's not a very pretty chain either.
From a technical point of view, the photo is fine - shooting in RAW did work, the bokeh works well, the small bits of railing cut off on the right actually frame the image quite nicely.
The background colour is complementary, but boring, the fact that the chain is rusty makes it less aesthetically pleasing, but is insufficient to make it interesting.
Looking at the other photos in your portfolio, you have the technical skill, the imagination, and the aesthetic sense to capture things that are genuinely beautiful and unique. Please use those. This image doesn't do you justice at all.
