Lost Caseby adineComment: THe reflection from your lights on the icecream isn't quite appealing, but I'm not gonna pull your score down for it, as there is little you can do about it (short of bouncing it off a diffusor). Cool idea. literally |

Snowball's Chanceby myqylComment: This one had me chuckle. Took me a while to actually FIND the snowball though - I think you would have done better taking a flash with a snoot - or even just a torch - and lit up the snowball further. 8 for the idea and execution though. |

1470° Degrees Centigradeby agwrightComment: Technically, this image is suffering. It seems very over-sharpened along the edges, and - despite the intense heat - you don't get the impression of heat. I think this might be a glassblower's oven - if it is, why didn't you snap the glass just as it came out? Oh well, good location, but not too good execution. (4) |

Heart Thawby BobsterLobsterComment: A very cool image and cool imagery - but I find myself wishing for a little bit more DOF and some more space around the image. (6) |

Keeping eggs warmby pitsamanComment: Whoah! The sharpness on this thing is just unreal. A fantastic image. I doesn't really give the impression of temperature to me, but who gives a damn - you're getting a 9 for it. |

Another Cold Oneby millerComment: Heya! This is your Critique Club message thingie.
I am partially happy that I got to critique this one, and partially sad. Y'see, I already said good things about it. Simultaneously, I dunno what to tell you about it either.
It is a truly great photograph. I really do believe that it should have won the challenge, but alas.
Fabulous idea, superb lightning, and (for once) a border that really stands out, and brings out the best of the photograph
The only thing I would comment on is that it seems a little oversharpened along the top edge of the glass. A pure nitpick, though, as it does not really distract from the image as a whole.
I used to have a Pro90 (can't remember being able to use ISO 50 - odd), and remember the camera to be really good - but I never got images this good out of it :)
Great effort, my friend - I am sure the ribbons are not far out of reach.
(but why did you use coors when you call yourself miller? hehe)
Rock on!

B is for BOXCARby autoolComment: A pretty cool photograph you have there. To the point that I find it very difficult to tell you what can be improved with it. The choice of using a polarizer was obviously a good one. The boxcar itself is captured in a cool way. The shadows on the side of the car only help to break up the monotony, which is all good.
I think that you met the challenge in a good way, and there is not much to be improved in the picture. I guess the only thing that stopped you from winning was that the subject is a little boring - Personally, I thought: "a boxcar. It starts with a B. So what" - there doesn't actually seem to be any motivation or message behind the image (apart from beginning with a B), which pulls the overall impression down.
Keep it up though - technically you are sound, and it is only a matter of time before you get another ribbon! |

Binoculars... with big Bby russiComment: Critique Club
A very difficult photograph to take correctly. I think the idea is great, but the main problem with this is that the binoculars themselves are too dark. All the detail of this pair of B's (esp. because they are obviously used a lot) has been lost, which I think is why you didn't do better than you did (although 5.5 isn't a bad score at all)
The only decent advice I can give you is to make sure that your image is lit properly, and try to do your best to bring out all the characteristics of your subject.
A good idea that faltered slightly on the technical side.
Keep it up! |
