It strikes me as odd that it scored as low as it did. Techincals are good. Composition is not the strongest, but not "bad". I probably would crop it at the left edge of the podium.
I liked your title and it is such that often runs with these types of photos. I might have added the Landcaster, PA to the title, but it is a trivial thing that isn't neccesary.
I think you captured a nice moment here, but as we both know DPC likes extremes. Extreme angles, extreme lighting , etc.... so while you had a good example of photojournalism, you didn't get that POP that voters here are looking for. That doesn't say anything negative about your talent as a photographer, IMO, just a spoiled voter base that often does not understand a genre. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

Probably good this in an outtake, I think you would've got hammered in voting, unless you could come up with a title such as... "Dirty old men caught fiddling in public" or something like that. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/09/2006 01:10:03 PM | Error Avertedby SandmanComment: Definitely sign up as a PJ for the school paper. It's GREAT experience and you have skills.
This is an awesome sports capture. A tribute to your ability to capture both action and emotion in one shot. Technicals are all there, compostion is strong and the shot just screams to be looked at. I gave it a 10 in voting. I was impressed.
I really can't tell you of anyway you could have made this photo any better, other than a bit more curves adjustment to boost contrast and saturation.
Advice about PJ in general. Take assignments, do your best to capture them at thier highest. I really think you'd do well. Just try to tell a story with your photos and gather as much info about what is happening in the photo as you can: Who, what, when, where, why and how. That info helps writers and editors with follow-up and placement of your photo.
I alos reccomend you write some if you have time. It helps you to learn the journalism process and how to answer question for the viewer. It gives you more insight into what to capture in your photos, also.
Oh, and if ya want a free lunch a stop at PR events is always good :-) | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/09/2006 12:57:41 PM | Russian Empress-Dowager to be reburied this Septemberby GuGiComment: Not knowing the story behind this, it was hard for me to see a story in it. After reading YOUR comments it makes a lot of sense to me. And, it's not uncommon to run a photo like this with a story like that. So, now, I have to say well-done on it. I wish the story could have run with the photo. That would have been neat, huh?
Technically, this photo is really good and despite probably getting a few DMNC votes scored somewhat well.
Is it photojournalism? Yes, I'd have to say. Does it stand alone? No, especially not to us not in the know. I'm actually ashamed I'm wasn't in the know on this, as I usually like to keep up on world events.

| 05/09/2006 12:50:44 PM | Body found in swampby alpharichComment: You said you got a lot of comments about being grey, and I have to agree with them. You definitely need to bump up the congrast in this image. I probably would have preferred it in color though. As far as the dead/not dead thing goes: I like the idea, but it's just not convincing.
Other aspects of the image:
Composition is not terribly interesting. I think you were trying to run this image on "shock value" and ignored other things that make a photo good.
Technicals such as lighting and focus are good, but easy to overlook.
All-in-all, I do believe that "faking" the scene hit ya the hardest though. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/09/2006 01:02:30 AM | alena.jpgby margiemuComment: This one is a lot better, technically. Focus is sharp, color is better and Dof works better here. Even the lighting is better.
I do prefer the action captured in the other better, but this would have scored much better for you. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/09/2006 12:44:55 AM | Snohomish Invitational GU-13 Finalsby margiemuComment: First Impression - the most important one:
It's a nice action shot, you've caught the play of the game well, but some technical details, such as a bit soft focus is distracting.
Composition:
The crop works well, this is a typical composition for a newspaper shot. The fence line at the very top is a bit distracting though. Also, DoF is quite deep. I'd like to see a bit shallower depth of field to blur the background. This would help with my earlier comment of the people and also my issue with the fence line.
Subject:
Subject matter was good for this challenge. Almost any photog that has ever worked for a newspaper has shot sports. So, I think you made a good choice.
Technical (Color, focus, and light):
Focus issues, I feel hurt you the most.
Color is ok, but not vivrant. Playing with curves (or at least boosting saturation) would definitely add points.
Sports shots are tough when it comes to lighting and yours is not bad, considering the dynamic range it had to cover (black and white uniforms).
From a photojournalism standpoint
Minus the focus issues (which may be able to be fixed with USM) this shot would run in most small local newspapers easily. You could do these with a litle practice. But, try more with the longer lens, the DoF and being able to reach into the game will give you more of what viewers and editors are used to seeing.
Well, I hope this helps. I hope to see more from you in the future. :-)
