This is an intriguing image. I love the layers of shadow and light. The angle adds interest. I am left wondering what is going on, what activity is being performed. But this uncertainty isnt unpleasant, it doesnt feel like a cliffhanger. It just feels good.

Greetings from the Critique Club -

Just read your description - "best of a bad bunch". LOL - We have all been there for sure. Though I don't think this is as bad as the score you recieved.

You easily met the challenge. The HDR treatment may be a tad heavy on this shot. What I tend to do when I do editing similar to HDR is bump up the blacks a bit afterwards. In this shot everything comes off as almost too pastelly (is that a word). I think if the blacks were a bit more black the image would have popped a bit more.

Really not a horrible shot - just one that didnt reson te with the DPC crowd. We really are a finnicky bunch arent we.

Solid shot here. Easily meets the challenge. The long exposure works great, excellent light, great detail and a wonderful smooth feel to the image. If this were my shot I may have dodged the boats a bit to make them stand out a bit more prominently but as is its still a lovely scene.

Not much else to add here. A very nice shot with a very good score attached to it. Well done.

Greetings from the Critique Club -

From a quick browse through the comments you recieved I see that I will probably sound like a broken record on certain aspects.

You met the challenge for sure. There is a recognizable boat in the shot. But there are some issues here that definitely kept you from bringing in the higher votes from the (very picky) DPC crowd. Night shots of moving targets are tough. You did well using your high ISO and longer than usual shutter speed for (I am assuming) a handheld shot. I am surprised you didnt get more motion blur on your subject. But it still isnt as sharp as most DPC'ers are looking for.

Your tilted horizon is a big issue for most dpcers as well. They like either a straight horizon or an obviously intended tilt. This shot doesnt feel tilt intended. Straightening that up I think would have given you several tenths onto your score.

Your background while very cool (and I would keep that in mind for future challenges) competes with your boat. My eye is drawn more to the city scape and the boat starts to blend in with the city lights.

That all said - I really like the variety of lights and colors you have here. The NN did pretty good taking care of most of your noise issues.

Looking at your vote curve you realize tat it could be much worse. 5.1 average isnt great but you didnt really have alot of people who hated this shot. But in the end you didnt strike a chord either way.

I see you have been here just since March. Welcome! I hope you are finding your time spent here well worth it. There is a ton of info on this site that is worth gold. Pay attention to what people are doing and how they do it and keep on entering. Your scores will continue to go up.

I really thought this would be in the top 5 easily. Yours was my 2nd choice for top image in the challenge (next to Louis of course). Great light, great DOF and detail. Top notch image all around.

Congrats on the HM. An excellent image. Makes me want to get a casing for my camera. Then I would have to get a pool too.
