He Ain't Heavy...by hotpastaComment: Hi Hotpasta,
You know your stuff and you probably figured that this might take a beatin' at DPC.
I think you have a cute shot and i have no technical advice to offer except that a tighter crop might have been nice(about 50-60% tighter). Its a tough one because you have captured a nice sense of action, the reflection in the water is very nice, but the yellow BG is a pretty big distraction for me. But, the challenge was pretty restrictive so...????
Actually i think that shifting your shooting position to the right to use a 100% yellow BG would have been the best choice. Of course then you would have likely had another table in the way.
Cute shot but not destined for big scores on DPC :)
I love your work and look forward to many more.
Cheers and God bless.

Young Jazzby alonzo4bComment: Hi from the Critique Club.
Tonights critiques are more of the rambling kind so i hope you don't mind. Here goes...
Your focus looks spot on, the lighting is soft and diffused and you did a very nice job of framing her. I especially like how the flute leads the viewers eyes up to her face(which really tells the story).
I really dont have any real criticism to offer because you did such a good job on this pic, especially considering the restrictions of the challenge. I dont really care for the big guy in the BG but thats pretty minor. I'd love it w/o the microphone too.
Good job and a 5.5xx is a pretty good score around here. This isn't the type of picture that just grabs the viewer and says "LOOK AT ME" but it is a fine example of photography. Keep shooting and good luck. Maybe i'll run into you in SF sometime. (I'll keep my eyes open :) )
PM me with any comments or questions. FWIW i like your title.
Cheers,

Through the Shrubburyby jusdino4itComment: HI from the Critique Club,
Tonight i'm leaving CC comments which are pretty random, kind of a flow of ideas/comments as the enter my brain. :) HOpe i make some sense...
You have done a pretty good job of catching this big guy in your frame. The stray grasses bother me somewhat. You have a very nice texture showing on his skin and especially his trunk. Compositionally shifting your shooting position to the Left just a few inches would have improved the image greatly(The ele would have been out of the center position and closer to the rule of thirds line) and the grasses would have still been in the frame giving a nice depth to the picture. I notice one commentator liked the center crop and to that I agree, if you could have shown a little more of his trunk. A center crop would be especially effective if the elephant had some eye contact with the viewer. RUN! RUN! RUN!
It looks like your exposure could have been decreased by a stop or so which would have given a stronger feel to the pic.
Considering the restrictions imposed by the special rules in this challenge you did a good job with this pic. Post processing could have helped you out immensely. For the next time you go to the zoo...seek out this guy or another one and take some pics with a really tight crop to emphasize the largeness of an elephant. Get him to charge at you if possible ;)
PM me with any questions or comments and keep shooting.
Cheers,

The Undersideby dwolffComment: Hi from the Critique Club...
This will be a bit of a freewheeling critique which is a departure from the norm for me and my previous CC comments. Here goes...
Your composition is nice with the rule of thirds observed in a good way. I like the different POV as we still see most flowers looking down at them. The OOF BG shapes and patterns are very well done. Your lighting seems well diffused and non directional leaving a very pleasant colors and tones to this image.
My main critisism is the your focus choice. IMHO i feel like the focus would have worked better had it been on the center of the flower as opposed to the petal on the LH side. This would help draw the viewers eye through the pretty OOF petals in the foreground, pause on the sharply focused center and then wander around the OOF BG which is one of the nicest parts of this pic.
Overall, considering this came straight from the camera, well above avg in terms of lighting, sharpness, color, and composition. Good job!
PM me with any questions or comments and keep em coming!
Cheers,

And the Rockets Red Glare...by CutterComment: The firework is cool but for me the people in the lower right make the shot. I think its the dudes ballcap and the way their faces are all perfectly looking at the burst. Congrats on a fine pic with excellent composition. |

24kby SJCarterComment: I like the reflection in the pond water. I fell like the center of the fall is a little bright but it looks like waterflow was pretty high. A slight shift in camera position to the right might have moved the drop out of the center which would strenghthen the composition IMHO. Cheers. |
