Hey there from the Critique Club

Camera Work/Technical: Overall, this is a nice image Your focus is crisp, the image is very clean, and your colors and tones are great.

Lighting: Your lighting is also very nice. There are no harsh shadows or blown highlights, thus leaving all the detail for the viewer to see.

Composition/Content: The corner of the room works very well for this composition to really flow. Both the upper and lower room corner work very well to draw the eye into the frame. The ball with its blur trail also works well as yet another leading line.

My Opinion: I think that you met the challenge well, and did so in a creative manner. It just seems that this was not the type of image the average voter was expecting.

Hey there from the Critique Club

Camera Work/Technical: There is absolutely nothing that I can find technically wrong with this photograph. Your tones are spot on and your focus is crisp. Everything is the frame is well focused.

Lighting: Again, flawless. Your subjects are perfectly lit and the background is perfectly dark. It would be really hard to find something wrong with the lighting.

Composition/Content: Very interesting. I get a true sense of loneliness by what you put together here. Her body position and outstretched limbs grab the viewer's eye and pull it into the image.

My Opinion: There would be no reason for a DQ, but you didn't hit the challenge according to the voters' scoring. I think this image is terrific, and in a different challenge, it would have been near the top. Even outside the challenge parameters, I think it's much better than 5.13.

Hey there from the Critique Club

Camera Work/Technical: Very, very nice. Your focus is crisp and your coloring is perfect for this image.

Lighting: Yet another strength for this image. You did a terrific job with contrasting highlights and shadows to present a very moody photograph.

Composition/Content: I think that the centered composition works very well for this image. The cap provides a great leading line that sends the eye up and down the entire frame.

My Opinion: I think that you were robbed. This is a much better photograph than 5.19. I think including more of the empty basement would have helped the score, but I do get a strong feeling of emptiness with the composition as it is.

Hey there from the Critique Club

Camera Work/Technical: This looks like an image that it technically flawless, unfortunately it is hard to tell at the size that it is presented. I like the dirty feel that you gave the image with post-processing, and I'd like to see you post both how you did it, as well as a larger version of it.

Lighting: Whether genuine lighting or post-precessing, this lighting is wonderful. I really like the isolated feel that you gave to your subject.

Composition/Content: Very nice, and the description in your comments made it even better. There are some really nice elements that lead the viewer around the frame, all the while not competing too strongly with the subject.

My Opinion: The score suffered from the size constraints. Unfortunately, I think we needed to see even more of the structure to give it more of an empty feeling.

Hey there from the Critique Club

Camera Work/Technical: Technically, this is a very nice photograph. Your focus is very nice and crisp and your depth of field is nice, including all the major elements in nice focus.

Lighting: Your lighting is also very nice. The tones and light angles give this capture a great feeling of mood and loneliness. There are no harsh shadows or blown highlights that lose detail or distract the viewer.

Composition/Content: Your composition is a bit too centered, though it flows very well. The content is a bit confusing, and I have a difficult time relating it to the title.

My Opinion: While I do get a slight sense of loneliness from the image, I don't get an empty room feeling. With that, I think that this one scored pretty close to its potential.

Hey there from the Critique Club

First of all, congrats on a top 15 finish, as well as your second highest scoring image to date.

Camera Work/Technical: At first glance, everything appears very crisp and nicely focused. Looking at the image longer, something the average voter does not normally do, I can see that the mirror's edge is blurred and there is some pixelation in your shadows. I think I would have preferred this one with a deeper depth of field.

Lighting: Your lighting is terrific, and your near flawless tones and coloring suggest an excellent white balance choice. The top of the mirror frame appears to be a touch overexposed, but I think that is more of a focus than an exposure issue.

Composition/Content: Your composition give a great feeling of emptiness. You used the mirror very well to establish some very interesting leading lines. My only composition change would be to edit that shadow out of the right hand side of the frame. It is mildly distracting and competes for the eye's attention.

My Opinion: Mice job meeting the challenge. I think you did a very nice job meeting the voters' expectations for this challenge. I believe that this one scored nicely and very close to its potential.

Well, this is a real stretch for an empty room challenge. I have to say that this one lost me for this particular challenge. Beyond that, the blur effect is a hair too strong, and the large shadow cast by her right breast is distracting. Very nice exposure and tones, though. Nice shot for a different challenge.

Hey there from the Critique Club

Camera Work/Technical: This is a very neat idea, but the entire image looks a little soft to me. I think that most of it may have been your desaturation technique. The blur in the faces works fine and actually adds to the ghostly feel, but the rest of the image could stand to be a bit more crisp.

Lighting: Nice choice for lighting choice, but your tonal range is very flat. Again, most likely from your desaturation technique. It looks like you simply converted this one to grayscale. As it is, a strong s-curve in a curves adjustment layer would help out a great deal. If you are using Photoshop, give the Channel Mixer a shot. While everyone has their own settings, 45%/32%/30% works pretty well for skin tones.

Composition/Content: I like the centered composition and the mirror feel that you created. Everything looks nice and straight. The only change would be to try to get her level on both sides of the frame. That sounds good, but may be a lot more trouble than it's worth.

My Opinion: You did a very nice job meeting the challenge, but this one lacks the needed pop to vault it into a higher scoring range. The one single change to make to this particular shot would be amping up the contrast. That alone would pull a much better score.

Hey there from the Critique Club

First of all, welcome to DPC. You have found a great community that often seems like a family that is far too close to one another. You will love the site, you will hate the site, and you will most likely become addicted.

Camera Work/Technical: Your chosen settings yielded an image that is nicely focused with a decent tonal range. I'll mention more on that in lighting.

Lighting: Your lighting provides a very nice direction for the eye to flow, but it seems a little flat. You have strong lights and darks, but there is a slight haze over the image. Try to include specific editing steps in your photographer's comments. It helps us out when making suggestions in the critique. I am assuming that you just desaturated the image into grayscale. If you are using Photoshop or elements, try using a Hue/Saturation later, the channel mixer or even LAB color. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Composition/Content: Your composition is very strong and appealing in this image. The curved wall, as well as the separation of ground surfaces provide great leading lines.

My Opinion: I think that you met the challenge well, and could have scored even better with some slight adjustments. Voters on this site tend to like vivid colors, crisp focus, and third world models. Of course there are exceptions to the general rule, but look through past challenges and I think you'll see what I am speaking of. Again, welcome to DPC. I hope you decide to foot the $25 and join us as a Member.
