Yes. An unusual young/old face and those blood vessels in the eyelids immediately lift this into more than an ordinary portrait. I've always liked portraits with the eyes shut as well; they are rare, and nearly always more interesting for that counter-intuitive decision. This is an extraordinary photograph, quite boldly conceived and very well executed. 8.

Three years later, and I still remember it! And I haven't lost my admiration for it either. In the intervening period I have slowly realised that I have a great attraction to images that are both abstract and not abstract at the same time. Images that have two lives simultaneously, I suppose; a literal identity (1185 W. Georgia) and another life as a celebration of what beauty can derive from just shapes, tones and mass, and the relationships between them. I have in the last year or so begun to experiment with this abstract/not abstract idea myself, and this image has remained clear in my mind as the inspiration for it.

This is really beautifully composed & lit. The shapes and the sense of 'weight' that they bring makes the image feel balanced even though it has strongly open and closed sides. Good that he is walking out of the shot ... it works with the way the light is. The impression of something carried in the guy's right hand is strangely compelling too; is it something? Or just a shadow? Instrument case maybe? He walks like a musician.
