Red White and Blueby DrakeComment: Hello from the critique club
An appealing image that meets the challenge
A great shot Drake amply rewarded with score and HM, well done. Yes, ok this has been done many times before but you have made an excellent job in the execution of the image. There is a real vibrancy to the end result. The lighting, the drops, the backdrop are all well placed but what works best is the detail in the distorted drops this is the essence of the success of this shot it is what makes it all so appealing, well done Drake. |

An appealing image that meets the challenge
Well Marcel, you’ve really got me intrigued here! Even with your explanation I don’t see either a flower pot or a television but what I do see is an intriguing image that defies explanation which is good. I like the symmetry, nice sharp focus surrounded by softer, (blurred?) detail. The muted colours work well and the lighting highlights and shadows also work well. I would have liked to see this do better but perhaps it was just a bit too undefinable but still a good image, well done Marcel. |

Incidental Gritby ColeyComment: Hello from the critique club
An interesting image that meets the challenge
A great portrait Cole. The shallow DOF from that maximum aperture is what makes this such a great image, your focus getting the eyes sharp is in the right place with just enough DOF to keep the nose in focus too. It’s really emphasising the rugged face against the nice soft focus facial and body features. I like the mono processing together with the grainy feel it really enhances the end result. If I were to change anything it would be the top background, I really wish you had that dark background throughout giving it a low key even grittier feel. With such a challenge as this it is open to wide interpretation, I suspect some may have voted it down because they didn’t feel it was incidental enough but your use of technique fills the challenge brief for me, well done. |

Pear Trees in Bloomby CyrildaComment: Hello from the critique club

Well Susie, you’ve certainly got soft focus and high key to meet the challenge brief but its not quite working. They elements have no cohesiveness there is no focal point against a backdrop of uninteresting bland white sky, I’m sorry but it just fails to hit the spot. I do like the curve in the road, though I’d probably have cropped the left corner out. I think perhaps a panoramic with much less sky and a slower shutter speed with correct focus but softness created through motion blur from a slower shutter speed may have worked better. Sorry Susie, better luck next time. |

What a brightly coloured conspicuous little bird you have captured here. That blue plumage is really quite striking. Its a lovely pose with bird looking into the frame with a nice profile of his beak and features. The twisted silver twigs of the tree to are quite remarkable, I like the way you’ve composed with the bird on the left with everything flowing to the right. All in all a great shot janine, well done. |

Elegant being a most appropriate title Gin Tay, a lovely image. The composition is lovely with the strong base at bottom left and that lovely sinuous stalk reaching up in to the frame topped by the gorgeous yellows of the petals. I love the pastel shades and the lighting sets it all off really well. The soft focus background is nicely done too with just enough and not too much detail to detract from the flower itself, a lovely job well done. |

Well done Ronnie, a cracking image with a cracking lens, a great start with your new acquisition. Your chosen technique of manual focus has undoubtedly saved the day here, so often when there are foreground reeds as here the focus will suddenly flip just at that critical moment, you have avoided that problem, well done. As for the image itself well, it really has everything, down to good timing and patience on your part. You really have got your wildlife shots well nailed. As for the pee, I think I might too in that situation! |

A lovely image Luana. I like your composition and crop with the sharp stamens on the hotspot and the shallow DOF you’ve opted for with maximum aperture. The white background provides the high key aspect without any distraction to contend with its all working very well. The lighting is good too. I like the greenness of the stalk it provides a nice balance with those dominant reds. All in all Luana its a masterful job that I’m surprised didn’t score higher, well done. |

First of all, welcome to DPC Srikanth. I would say you’ve made a very commendable start to your infant photography, this is very well executed with the all-important eye nice and sharp. There is an air of vulnerability mixed with curiosity that makes this a very appealing image. The DOF is good with nice soft focus in the fore and background. I like that you have chosen to present this in mono which in itself is quite unusual as most shots at this early age are done in colour. I think a little judicious cropping of the right to bring the child more off-centre would improve the end result but all in all a great image, well done. |

We’ve probably all been there at some point, putting the camera away too early, so pleased you didn’t here Drake, well done. A nicely composed shot with the emphasis clearly on that fiery sky, you’ve caught it all at just the right moment with the sun lighting the bottom of the cloud in a most pleasing way. I like the counter-balance of the lighthouse and your timing to wait for some illumination form it too. I think there is scope to tweak the brightness a little to increase its appeal but still a lovely image Drake. |
