1969by 4scoreComment: Congrats on your top 20!
No one got a higher score from me in this challenge and I'd never take it back. |

Shady Stairsby glad2badadComment: I decided not to vote on this challenge, but I did mean to leave you a comment.....which would have said, "Walter Wick would be proud!"
I, too, looked to his work for inspiration. The week didn't allow me time to pull anything off. Wouldn't you love to re-create the one with the pillars?!
Sweetly done. Expertly lit. Props so well chosen. "Idowse" had an interesting suggestion about confusing the up and the down....always something to build on here, no? |

1920by RgarciaComment: Love the subject! I think the textures would be better if not so over-exposed. (and....is that curious white object in the wagon made of plastic?) |

Back to 92 AD in a Time Capsuleby XileboComment: Interesting effect! It seems as if you've intentionally panned beyond the typical freeze-subject pan...and to good effect! ( I recently tried this with carousel horses with so-so results.)
On the down side, the thick frame is not necessar and seems to detract from the delicate lines of the harnesses. It would be nice if there were more of the chariots in the frame as my eye keeps traveling right in hopes to see a bit more.
Overall, this appears to be a successful technique worth exploring further. |

1955by CutterComment: Apparently, I need to go win a ribbon before you can value my comments, therefore I will strike this one. (I'd take my vote back, too, if I could.)
Rather cool! I like the choice of desaturation--the reds just pop.
Given the many anachronisms in this image, I would have believed 1975 long before '55--especially with the long hair on the model. (Others include the plastic pitcher, the catsup bottles, the towel dispenser...)
Still a fine image in which the highlights sing.Message edited by author 2005-10-12 14:15:01. |

1580 - The Middle Class Yarn Spinnerby awpollardComment: I love the romance of the "yarn spinner" this image captures! Admittedly, you've lost some detail in the highlights, but that just seems to draw the focus in toward the storyteller's animated expression. Lovely image! (I hope you plan to share it with the performer.) |

1960: First Modern Balloon Flightby Zed PobreComment: Well, I didn't believe your title, so before I commented I made a little internet search--always something new to learn, isn't there?
That out of the way, I like this image. The hint of high cumulous clouds at the bottom increases the drama and the sense of flight. The grain works well with the black and white image--nice choice for the challenge topic. Lovely range of tones. It does appear you have sensor dust or a smudge on the lens recorded just below and left of the basket--too bad we can't fix these things in basic challenges--not a huge distraction anyway. |

Movie night in 1928by digidoriComment: This movie house lobby has great potential as a lovely subject, It is clearly a difficult one as the poor lighting causes the camera to be set such that you cannot avoid producing digital noise.
There are too many anachronisms in the image to make it convincing for the year you've chosen--the strand of Christmas lights and the numerous, small, computer-printed color posters just give it away. |
