I had a side bet with two other DPC'ers that somebody, probably more than one submitter, would do this - thank you - I won.

As darkness falls....
by linny

Comment:
The use of undersaturated color to almost monotone levels to convey an impression of oncoming dark is extremely effective and properly presents the concept expressed by the title. Rich in detail with no technical issues, this is a perfect demonstration of title, image and presentation coming together to create the perfect image. Should place very high in the challenge.

Comment:
Too bright, too over exposed, too busy, too many white blooms, too much of everything. A little less exposure for a shorter length of time would have made a better image and presented the title concept more effectively.

Sunset

Comment:
To be truly effective, sunsets need to be detailed, crisp and sharp to be effective and have some pop or wow factor. In this instance, the colors are interesting and the sun angle allows for a longer exposure time and/or HDR treatment. What ruins the effect is the trees - they add nothing to the image and in fact obscure some of the more intresting features of the sun set. There are two ways to do these images with this type of foreground - either a double exposure to increase the details or find a different angle with which to take the image that only uses one dark foreground feature that does not obscure the sunset.

Comment:
A beautiful juxtaposition of light and dark with the white just right on the edge of being over done. The deep colors and rich details are well exposed and captured. The reflective component is outstanding and heavily contributed to the peaceful mood this image conveys. A combination of challenge subject and landscape, this should place well in the challenge.

Placid Darkness

Placid Darkness

Comment:
Oddly, the feeling of this image is more of dread than of placid to this reviewer. The dark areas are forbidding - almost a scene from a murder mystery in which the serial killer hides in the dark pockets amid the light pools as seen in some of the more Hitchcockian genre movies. While in general the technical issues are well controlled, the slightly over done whites are a distraction - a little less exposure and control in post processing would have helped. A good solid image into the challenge.

Highlights right on the edge, prefectly back lit, crisp and sharp and very, very well controlled color and light. While not terribly interesting from an artistic sense, it still is an excellant image close to perfect as possible.

Comment:
Noir imagery is always a favorite of this reviewer and this has a very strong noir appeal to it. A little overly dark, but it works despite the heavy hand with exposure. The vague details are very effective in conveying a sense of mystery and intrigue. A genre of image not often seen, this could be used as a good example of the noir meme. Well done.

Comment:
A very diffeent look at the genre of Victorian silhouettes, this image is technically perfect. The technique used is stunning, although the upraised arm should be a little sharper with more detail or eliminated entirely to make the image perfet. The offset is perfect for blending into the background. Very effective from both a technical and artistic standpoint. Should place very high if not a ribbon winner. Well done.

An homage to a favorite movie, this invokes much the same feeling. While the white blooms a little and is slightly overdone, it's still effective conveying the same sense of mystery as the movie did. A little more detail in the foreground would have helped the artistic impression.
