 when this challenge was announced i wondered if i could get katee to look like she was drawing a pencil sketch of herself and pose with a pencil in her mouth ..
i already had a sketch of katee which was in b&w, so i coloured it in with the derwent pencils ..
i took katee, the sketch mounted on the easel (which i had bought especially), the mirror and my camera outside .. oh .. plus some doggy treats .. !!
i tried in a couple of places but the background wasnt working or the sunlight was too bright..
added to that it was quite windy and the noise from greg mowing on the other side of the house was freaking katee out and making her skittish ..
i finally placed all the stuff near some grass where i've taken a lot of insect photographs ..
i tried to get katee to sit closer to the easel, but she wouldnt get any closer than you see her here .. no matter what ..!!
and there was no way she'd hold a pencil in her mouth ..
i put some doggy treats on the easel hoping it would look like she was peering closely at the sketch ..
& i put doggy treats on the pencils so she'd look like she was choosing a colour or just about to pick one up ...
she would stay as far away as she could from the easel or pencils and lean in, which didnt work for me ..
i chose the challenge pic for her excellent expression & coz she's looking right at you .. fixing you with her eyes sort'v ..

i dont think i'll use katee in a challenge again coz she's been a real pain .. all week she's been hassling me to hit that bloody update button !!..:)
& its been pretty exciting.. after 100 votes i thought i might get a pb ..

and these are the processing steps i just sent into the sc ..
opened jpeg in cs3 ..
shadow and highlight mainly on the drawing of katee and to a lesser degree in other parts of the image ..
lucisart exposure on the entire image ..
lucisart whyeth on the drawing of katee, the mirror reflection and some of the grass ..
nik efex color efex pro/glamour glow on most of the image except the pencils, katees face and her refection in the mirror ..
smart sharpen entire image .
hue and saturation adjustment layer to boost the coloured ends of coloured pencils ..
cropped ..
flattened and scaled up ..
stroke for inner border ..
inner shadow ..
clone out power lines ..
curves adjustment layer in soft light ..
selective colour adjustment layer to boost colours again ..

Back for another look, mostly at your details you wrote. One of my dog's birthday is coming up, looking for tips on how to keep them still! lol...
Is this your fox terrier you once told me about? surprisingly similar looking to my youngest one, Conan who is chihuahua according to his parents papers...but definitely has the look of a Fox, who probably got his fathers genes, my oldest one Lupo...who is a dedicated alpha male. I have to feed them in separate rooms!...keep up the good work, your one of the best.

This is another one of those images in the challenge that has a certain wow factor imo. It might be how sharp the dog looks as well as the coloring from the grass. Boy I wish the grass was that color here.

This is just so damn brilliant and innovative. My absolute favorite for a blue ribbon. I just love how you got that dog to pose for you. It must have taken quite a number of takes to get it just right. I presume you then sketched the dog from the photograph. Did you do the sketch yourself as well?
Superb effort and one that I hope will be rewarded accordingly. 9

Simple, elegant and very creative look at colored pencils - the image meets the subject matter uniquely and with a certain panache. A terrific demonstration of the creative process in meeting the challenge. Should be a sure bet to win a ribbon or place high as a top ten image. A couple of minor detail problems not worth mentioning because they don't appear until you really get a critical eye and examine the image closely. An all time personal favorite and a composition idea that this reviewer will shamelessly steal and use in the future. Well done.

This is very cute, I think a slightly shallower DOF would eliminate some of the distraction of the trees.
