This is based on the commonly known ghost story which claims that if you say "Bloody Mary" in a candlelit mirror three times she will appear and do bad things to you. If you were a junior high girl at one time, I'm sure you know this already. (No, that's not why I know it...)

No bugs were hurt in the shooting of this picture. Just wanted to get that out of the way.

Doing the picture was fairly easy. Jenn merely posed for half the shot then moved out of the picture quickly. I recomposed after the first try to get more light behind her thus making her look more translucent. The picture and bedpost help in this regard.

PP was contrast, channel mixer (B&W), color balance for sepia and the usual USM layers. I had to use dust and scratches because Jenn forgot to take her rings off the second time and we got some reflection that looked like hot pixels. Unfortunately a side effect of the dust and scratches was the small dings on the knife edge.

POST: Whew! Squeaked in. I really did like the other Bloody Mary shot better (see my comment on his shot), but I'll take 3rd. ;) Needed a yellow to complement the others.

This is fantastic...may I ask how you made her translucent?? If you said in your notes than I misunderstood. ;)

Lol, wow deja vu - I spent a good part of grades 4 and 5 scared to make eye contact with the mirror just in case I thought "Bloody Mary" three times! I figured that if saying it would make her come, thinking it would do the same. Ghosts can read minds, can't they?

Congrats dude, will be an honour to share the front page with you for a week. Like you said, too bad this doesn´t count in the WPL, BUT, last time I ribboned the last challenge before the WPL started, in Water II so if you really are superstitious, this bodes well for the Mag 7 :)

This is the coolest photo I've seen thus far in this category, great job. Only nitpick which I won't vote you down for is that the triple shadows make for a dirty spot on the ceiling where they all intersect.

06/30/2006 02:13:40 PM
LOL! Did that 'till death do we part' line run through your mind when you were making this?

Very well done. Thanks.

Doc is that you? I think you've done a good job on this one. Something about the composition seems off though. I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it's the top of the mirror being chopped off that is throwing me. I really like the idea and execution. The monochrome was a good idea, but I think it might have been better to go with strictly black and white. The sepia tones give the image a "warmth" that doesn't fit with what you're trying to depict. A very contrasty black and white might give the image an eerier (is that a word?) feeling.

06/29/2006 12:36:29 PM
Jason - this is freaky! I do like the candlelight, gives an erie up-lighted mood and your "ghost" is perfect. Bumping to 8 :)

06/28/2006 06:35:06 PM
The sepia tones work really well for this. The dark shadow on the right side of the mirror is a little bothersome. LOVE your expression, though, Doc! And the 'ghost' looks perfect.

I like the sepia but I find the shadows on the ceiling in the reflection to be very distracting.

Nice shot, the ghosting of the image is perfect for this legend, the darker color helps with overall composition

Pretty nice image here. Thinking a higher angle to see less of the celing in the mirror and a more uniform placement of the tea lights to show more of the frame. but very nice overall
