The mute swans mate for life. But they will (hopefully) find a new mate if one dies. This is either Louis or Serena -- we're not sure which. Louis and Serena were a pair of swans living in a nearby pond. One of them was killed by a car 4-5 years ago. We were all terribly sad.

Two years ago another swan showed up at the pond. And Louis (I think it was Serena that we lost) ended up with a new mate.

Life is hard for the swans. They usually have a batch of cygnets -- last year it was 12, and it seemed like each morning there were less and less.

Snapping turtles, I hear, is the primary cause.

1 cygnet survived last year.

Mute swans are an invasive species. There is concern that they are causing problems for the native species on the eastern flyway.

Beautifully captured, contemporary, yet reserved on the post operative side of things, and titled appropriately. I award you my tied-for-third place spot!
