I figured you were all tired of seeing my kids in portraits so I decided to do one of myself, the mask was mainly to hide my identity but I thought it was also fitting with the time of year. I had this mask from the golden challenge so I decided since it was new years day I would make it into a masquerade mask and add the feathers. I also wanted to do black and white so that it would be different than my golden entry. The B&W ended up turning out nice, it looked good in color too but I just liked B&W better.

Thanks for all the great comments and scores. Got a new one for my front page with this!

my lighting setup was this:

One speedlight with softbox to light background(keep in mind my speedights are not very powerful and only have 1 setting.

One speedlight with softbox diagonal left almost to the side but not quite.

Reflector really close to the subject on the right. It is just barely out of the shot.

On camera speedlight pointed at the ceiling for fill. This one is a nicer one and I can adjust it, but I usually keep it at 1/4 or 1/2 power.

Impressive portrait! Great light and contrasts in B&W. Missed the voting of this challenge, but it would have been one of my favorites. Congrats with your ribbon! And my guess is this is one of the few images here at DPC with a 5 as lowest score. I'll make a thread about that. Perhaps someone knows.

Just browsing a little through the top-10 images of this year

This image reminded me of something Ivory might do, but perhaps not as elaborate with a more classic feel. How lovely you are! Congrats on your ribbon, Jenn!

Hey Jen, could you explain what you used for lighting? I imaging one light on the left (looks to be pretty low powered?), and maybe a reflector on the right to kill the shadows? really like the lighting on this image, and am still trying to get to a point where my portraits look like this. Lovely shot!

Very professional but ...It's just too much detail here. Too many things to tell.

People are probably give you crap about the mask...quite frankly i like the mask. It ads a little mysteriousness to the photo and puts focus on the eyes. Great shot.

Beautiful light. Wish the mask was a bit more aligned to be equal around each eye and across her nose.

Beautiful portrait, the eyes are so intense and what expression that is revealed is great. Good balance and contrast throughout.

Lovely set up and tones. I also like her eyes. Her lipstick seems to be outside the line of her lips and the only reason I mention this is because your beautiful photo made me stop long enough to notice such a minor detail.

great shot, lovely tone and smoothness to the mark and definition in the hair and feathers, at last a portrait worthy of a photography website, all ive seen so far are poorly lit snap shots. 8
