it's a dinner plate dhalia, which if it had been cut with a longer stem could have allowed for a bit more experimentation.
the light on the flower is quite good. the vase is a distraction. the hot spots on it, and the bubbles on the inside of the water. ( you can avoid the bubble by letting the water sit for a bit, or using a Q-tip to brush them away ). i've also heard boiling the water first will eliminate the bubbles, but i've not tried that.
another thing to try if you have a 3rd light would be to blast light on a background which will bounce back thru the glass, and help with the hot spots from the other lights ( this light would be below the table top aiming up ), as well as back light the flower. think about a complimentary color background to accentuate the flowers color. you could probably make it work with two flashes, and a reflefctor. one flash on the BG, one for the main light on the subject, and a reflector to bounce back the main light.
the BG light would likely be set to about twice the power as the main light. but that depends alot on distance to subject, and BG color, among other things.
nice work.
