just a small piece of seaweed paper (about 2"x3"), the kind Japanese use for making sushi rolls. I placed it on top of the lightbox (actually, a softbox turned front side up). Strong backlighting revealed the beautiful texture of this thing.
In post-processing, I inverted the image, and played with various sliders controlling the colors - temperature, channel mixer, hue/saturation etc, until I liked it.

that's what I originally planned to submit, but the color version just blew it out of the water for me.
based on the score and few comments, this image is obviously not for everybody's taste.. you have to really like El Greco and Jackson Pollock (I do) to appreciate this... Thank you Don for the bling, I was happy to see that you liked it.
