Not the first challenge entry I have done illustrating a drilling rig. Hopefully, this will do better than the prior efforts. The subject does not seem to be a popular one, though I find it very interesting. Entering this anyway, since I don't have any exotic tribes near me for the stereotypical NG shot.

It was fascinating watching what they were doing. This worker was placing drilling pipes (from the vertical stack on the left) into the head, then the men at the bottom would connect the lower end, he's step back and they would get pushed down into the ground, and the head would raise up to receive another pipe.

Anticipated critiques:
-Expecting someone to take issue with the details visible in the rig near the bottom, suggesting I should have silhouetted the entire thing.

This is an interesting one. The average is only mid pack, but it's pulled in a fair number of very positive comments.

For those that are interested, Here's a very good video explaining and illustrating this type of drilling.

Post-challenge notes:
Thought this would do better on the average score, but having pulled in 9 positive comments and a commenter's average of 7.6, I know I nailed this one. Without any negative feedback, I am left to assume that my subject simply didn't grab the interest of a lot of the others, or they didn't find it to be an NG type of image.

Gutsy Steve. Pity more folk didn't make the time to explore a Nat Geo Mag or the remarkably diverse subjects they cover. They are but a click away.

Great work. The sky gradation is just gorgeous, it leads my eye down into the main subject, oddly the blue above down to the polluted brown below...maybe you didn't read it like this at the time but coming back to the image it just struck me. The human element inside the cage of wiring, reaching higher, his head seemingly connected by a wire like a puppet, is a lovely story telling silhouette, trying to get out of the pollution whilst reaching for new heights...romantic no doubt. NG has done work about oil/gas and the impact on us, so your image is relevant and really well photographed. I'm not familiar with horizontal drilling but I'm sure to go find out more now thanks to you. Bumped +1 to 10. I'll take a flier and say this is Texas and its a Yo_Spiff?

Wonderful silhouette!
I may or may not be voting, so please do not equate my comment with any score.

A good photograph that I could easily imagine accompanying an article on fuel provision.

The lines are so lovely, like he's puting up a circus tent.
