Composition (content)

Good silhouette. The dreary sky, the tree without leafs and the choice for B&W do a good job in communicating the message. In a way the tree and sky seem to tell the story about live in this place?
The placement of the tree and buildings is excellent and it is great how the bright parts of te sky are behind the tree and enhance the contrast.
The building at the lower left is a distraction. The picture would be better without it being there. You could opt to take it out for purposes other than this site (where the rules don't allow spot editing). This could also be applied to the branches in the lower right part of the image.
The tones in the sky are great.

Background
No real background, see above.

Camera Work (Technical)
The exposure is excellent for a silhouette. No detail in the foreground subjects, dramatic/erie dark grey tones in the sky. I don't know how much of this was done with the camera and how much in post processing, either way it is a good job.
Focus is good, depth ok, sharpness ok.

Digital Processing (technical)
Concerning quality vs compression I again have to say: save at the highest quality possible. See the comment on "Motion" picture.
A little bit of unsharp mask (30% 0,4 1) doesn't hurt, but isn't really necessary.

My opinion
Nice, but it does not really appeal to me personally.

Nice B&W shot. This shot keeps reminding me how cold im gonna be when I move to Mighigan next month. Great sharpness but I think a little tiny bit more of the foreground would have improved the shot.

Like the sky and the tree. The buildings provide some perspective.

Cool... I like the way the completely black forms silhouette starkly against the soft, undulating grey sky. The atmosphere of the photo definitely supports your title. The overall scene is unwelcoming and bleak, and the branches on that tree look gnarled and hostile. Nice work!

Very moody. Sky looks almost rendered. All that's missing is a crow sitting on a branch!

This is an incredible shot, in my book. This an excellent bw. My only complaint are the antennas on the buildings, and they aren't your fault; they just affect your image. Good sky. Did you use NeatImage to smooth that up a little, or is this "original"? Either way, it's great, and it's one of only four tens for me in this challenge.

nice pic. i would like it better if the tree was by itself and not with the distracting buildings. the tree has an eerie feeling to it.

I like the tree and the cloud background works well with it. The buildings I could have easily lived w/o. 7 Swash

very nice black and white :) the sharp contrast here is excellent and you did a nice job of catching a good exposure in the sky to show the light/dark cloud detail... good work :) - setzler

The mood set by this picture is awesome. The skeleton tree and dark buildings in the distance really set this one apart from other B&W shots. Well captured moment. - Inspzil

The bare tree silhouetted against the cloud-covered sky really works well, and is enhanced even more by the (very appropriate) use of b&w. The only niggle I have is that the lower left branches merge into the side of the building, but thats minor.

Very disturbing and moody. Love the sky; I'm a sucker for silhouettes.

This is a great Black and White photograph. The silouette of the bare tree gives this photograph a strength that would not be seen in a color version of the same scene. Very nice!!!

I really like your sky and the black and white is excellent. I wonder if you could have taken it or cropped out the building on the left though. DPz

great use of black and white!

Good use of long exposure setting. The stark tree really is a nice foreground for the industrial background. Only bother for me is the branches leading right into the building on the left. If you could have somehow positioned yourself to have the tree seperate from the shadow of the building you'd have a near perfect photo.

I love the starkness, and the moody feel of this shot, and feel that b&w is perfect for the photo. I like the composition focusing on the tree and sky with just the suggestion of buildings at the bottom. This shot has a lot of impact for me. 10. lhall

I looked at this a long time. I like it very much. The tree and sky are very.....spooky or eerie looking. Neat shot, good job.

The use of silouets makes the mood match the title exactly. Positioning of the elements and the tonal gradation of the sky are great. A perfect choice of subject for B&W photography. A very good job, congratulations!

I like your concept of the tree sillohetted against the cloudy sky, but the buildings don't fit with the title of Harsh lands. Can you shoot this from an angle to exclude the buildings? I also like that you did this in BW!

Awesome B&W. Great lighting

Great silhouette shot. I like how you can see the buildings behind the tree. The Antennas on those buildings add to the shot a lot. Overall great picture.

Super silhouette. Too bad the tree intersects with the building on the right. Good job. Jacko 8

Great tree - nice details in the branchs. I think I would like it a bit more if there was a way to capture the tree without the buildings in the picture - as it is now they are a bit distracting. Nice lighting - it captures the harsh feeling very well.

What perfect focus! Look at the little branches on that tree! I like the "color". I don't think "color" is the word I'm looking for rather the TONES of the photo. Very nice exposure and contrast. I love the sky. Great silhouettes. Angle and framing/cropping are good as well. A lovely shot. GOod luck in the challenge.
