I didn't realize that someone had already done a baby birds shot in the previous challenge. :)
I'm volunteering to monitor bluebird boxes at a local park. jcar and I went out with another volunteer. We record the number of eggs, babies, completeness of nest, etc, and send it to a group called Citizen's science. I was going to take pictures to document it.
Unfortunately, the step stool I was using didn't go high enough to hold my camera and the 100mm lens over the top of the nest.
Then I remembered my cell phone!!! :D
These aren't bluebirds, they are actually chickadees nesting in a bluebird box. Here the uncropped version. You can see part of the inside of the box on the left.
The chickadee babies are significantly smaller than bluebirds, and these were extremely new. Probably only about a day or so old. Incredibly tiny!
What looks like green grass is actually moss. The nest is built of moss, and the lined with little bits of grasses and feathers.
Looking at the size of the knot in the wood in the uncropped version, you can get an idea of just how small these babies are.
Here are some bluebird babies in another house:
And here's the shot I probably should have gone with. It's a bluebird on the nest:
This is the first time I've volunteered with this group. There are around 18 boxes, 15 of those had eggs and/or babies. It was terribly exciting! Unfortunately, I only am scheduled every 5 weeks or so... :(
