Red Admiral butterfly feeding on budlea in my garden.
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro lens, handheld in sunlight.
Just another butterfly photo but a nice specimen!
Post processing, gamma 1.3 to lift mid tones, rotate a little to improve composition, crop, USM, resize, USM, NeatImage to reduce noise generated by both high ISO and increased gamma.

A great image of a beautiful insect. Focus is great, colors are perfect, DOF is adequate. The composition works; the diagonal lines add life and the subject is placed well within the frame. The point of view is conventional, showing off the whole butterfly without emphasizing any particular part. And it works fine; this is a great photo. But not special.
The one thing I don't particularly like about the photo is the sharpness of the flowers in the foreground. A little selective blurring (not too much!), or maybe even masking them out of the USM applications could have made them a little less obtrusive.
for me this picture falls into the category of a solid picture. however, what keeps it from being a top 5 picture is the common aproach. top pictures seem to have an eye opening view or perspective that others don't.
Very nice. Alive or dead? Almost seems too good of a picture for it not to be staged. If alive, amazing capture! One of the best and one of my favourites.
Good subject well captured. Flowers are so busy they detract from the subject. Trouble with these pesky bugs is they won't stand still for you or pose where you tell 'em. Love the precise focus on the moth(?).
