Shot from the 528 causeway at the south tip of Meritt Island, at 3:30 AM, which was the best opportunity for shooting, as conditions improved until then, but deteriorated with fog later. With the great distance across water and land, heat waves were causing everything to look wavy, and making the lights on the tower twinkle. Heat inversion caused the mirage beneath the shuttle as well. I worked out the best solution for shutter speed by experimentation with iso.
This is not cropped. I used my telescope for this one.
I thought it pretty cool that the launch tower looks like a big robot from the 1950's holding on to the shuttle.

14 miles away through a telescope at night through heat shimmer - wow! That's pretty darned cool. I agree about the robot-hanging-on look. Love the colour.

Very nice long-distance shot -- love the mirage. You are right about the launch tower, but after all it is (essentially) a giant robot ... :-)
