This is a piece of Bismuth (Bizimuth). This is part of a man made sample that I purchased at Lapidary show.

Here are a couple of other looks at my 'sample'. Not sure what purpose there is to making this element in a lab other that just to say that it is possible to accomplish.

Please forgive the poor examples. I'm not good with indoor photography.

Since you seem to be curious as to what this is useful for, four things immediately come to mind:

1. It's pretty, display it as art.

2. An example of hopper faced crystal growth, which is actually very rare.

3. Melt it into a large thin plate, then do diamagnetic levitation.

4. Demonstrations of expansion upon cooling, another rare property, shared with water, antimony and a few other things.

I love the purple and blue colors you picked up in the reflections. I have no idea what this is, but it's neat. The only thing I can think of is that they are some kind of molds or something.
