This is inside the mausoleum of the WWI German cemetery in Bitola, where 3406 German soldiers are buried (cemetery was built in 1936). The town Bitola was on the front line during the first world war - the so-called Thessaloniki front. The town remained a front line city and was bombarded daily between 1916 and 1918, suffering almost total destruction.
Interesting story about this cemetery: when the Germans returned in WWII, seeing that the locals had maintained the cemetery through the years between the wars, in gratitude they replaced the old town clock with a working one.
The marble mosaic on the ceiling seemed appropriate for this challenge. Made from 3 exposures, tonemapped, topaz-ed, then changed my mind and turned it into a strong b&w. Suits the place and mood.
