Thank you for the votes and the great comments. We had this amazing sunset the day after the challenge was announced, and at this time of year the sun sets far enough south that it's over the water of Nantucket Sound. I shot a series with parts of the coastline, and/or rock jetties silhouetted, and then some where I swung the camera horizontally during the exposure for an abstract look, but just before I left the beach, amazed that this band of light still persisted, I noticed that the water was looking particularly lovely as well and took this, grateful for the image stabilized lens.

PS It's a nice image to break up all the "sandy" ones that otherwise dominate my top scoring images!

PPS. Interesting to note that the average vote from participants and non-participants are identical. I don't think that happens often.

One word... Zen. It's beautiful in its simplicity, and also due to the restraint you showed in processing it. A well-deserved ribbon, and kudos to the voters for recognizing it.

That's OK. I knew at the outset that this more abstract image would not appeal to some people. I was delighted that it did as so well despite this, and the many positive comments I've received indicate that it struck a chord with several people. The images of mine that I enjoy the most include several more abstract ones and I made a decision recently to pursue that style more deliberately, at least for a while. It would be a sad day indeed if we ended up with DPC comprised of members all of whom had the same tastes. Thanks for the comments.

ETA, It's perhaps not so much the image's abstract quality as its simplicity, and the serenity that it conveys, which several of you have pointed out :-). In general I think sunsets are often better enjoyed than photographed, but there seemed to be a special quality in the light that night, and I had a hard time tearing myself away from the beach that evening which is how I came to get this capture.

A side note: It's at times like that evening that I really regret that Robert (Bear_music) cannot use the phone. I wasn't so far away, but too far to go and get him down to the beach in time to enjoy/photograph this too. :-(
