i found a texture image on flickr then used overlay mode to blend it to my image. i didn't like the result though. I wanted the pine cone itself to be clearer so i used the eraser tool (at about 30%) and erased the texture layer some mainly where the pine cone was mostly in focus and let the oof portion be partially obscured with the texture layer.

you've got the right idea...I have a file that I just keep adding to that has all kinds of overlays...if you see something that someone has done and you like it ask them what overlays they used...me I like to use 3-6 per photo...it seems to make it more "grungy/moody"

those cone thingo's look almost like one very weird alien with multiple eyes .. or several weird aliens with a single eye each all standing together .. :)
