Challenge: Portrait Triptych (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-400D Rebel XTi
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Location: Davis CA
Date: Nov 4, 2010

I know I just very recently submitted a Chalk picture, but I just couldn't resist doing one for this challenge. Chalk just lends itself PERFECTLY to portrait story telling, since all factors can be controlled.

I don't think this will do nearly as well as the first one for several reasons: (though I am still hoping for a 6)
1) It is no longer new. People have now seen this style before
2) I just very very recently placed highly using this
3) I don't think the execution and idea is as good or creative as the last one.

It was pretty tricky for me to get all 3 images looking the same. As much as I was determined not to make any changes in between shots, the lighting changed as the sun rose, and the umbrella in the 3rd shot darkened everything as well.

When it comes to chalk, I have noticed that the simpler something is, the better it works. In this triptych, I find myself pretty much only staring at the first photo. I almost have to force my eyes away to look at the rest. I am pretty positive it is because it is the simplest.

After Challenge:
Thanks guys! I am very happy to get another top 10, and to be a little more assured that the first time wasn't just a fluke :-P
Believe it or not, this fluctuated between a 5.1-5.5 on the first night, and then sky rocketed up. Someone must have been playing games with me.

Special shout out goes to pitrpan, who made my day with his super nice comment. Thanks!

Your work is fantastic, and truly inspiring.
Fun, creative and appealing, and very artistic.
I love the boots matching the umbrella, and the 'dots' on the chalked umbrella half-finished.
You've certainly developed your own style which appears to get better at each challenge.

The first 2 pics are great! You lose me on the third. The real umbrella gets lost in the background and loses effect. You should have kept the drawn umbrella with the cats and dogs. IMO

i love this idea. I feel it's a shame you didn't just use the same background and add to it, but it wouldn't suprise me if i've missed a point.

Too late for the chalk challenge :) I like the simplicity of the color.

SO clever. Well done. Great humor and art direction. Just a tad dark, especially on the last one.

So very cleverly done! I wish the 800 pixels rule didn't make this so small. I'm left wanting to see more. Good stuff. Congrats. (not voting)
