Actually they were talking between their fish and chips. My timer just happened to go off at the right moment (after about 7 timers that is).

I really appreciated everyone's comments. Thank you!

That is a tremendous character study - and the B&w is perfect as it removes distractions and allows us to focus on the main subjects.

Just added to my favs.
Extraordinary capture. The photos in the background - telling other old stories of happy people - change this into something far above a candid or street capture. Funny and sad, telling simple and moving things about life and time.

I have to stop and look at this pic. The environment is captivating in that the restaurant looks like a great place to have lunch. Then there's the subject of the diners who appear so disengaged with each other; which makes this photo somewhat sad. Great choice to go B&W. Such an interesting but sad image; the story that the viewer can infer from it.

Fabulous!!! Not only the tension between the two, but their placement in the casual, quotidian setting, surrounded by other images and reflections we want to explore.

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: The very first image to come up for me in voting. What a treat! Great story, great expressions and a wonderful sense of silence. The question you have left us with is whether this is a comfortable or uncomfortable silence. The juxtaposition of the elements in the scene is striking; the happy social interactions depicted in the framed photos and the silent couple below works magnificently. I really lke the tones of your monochrome edit too.

Critical stuff: Nothing at all.

Overall: Wonderful storytelling. Great stuff.
