Wow, this is great. I guess i can relax a bit now. It was nerve racking from the start as I had to validate this image on the first day of the challenge.

It always seems that I don't fully realize the details of my image until after I've packed up the gear and props and I'm sitting in front of the image in post processing. This picture was no different. I have to learn how to fully realize the story before pushing the trigger. I'm glad that your comments also taught me how to improve my processing. Here is a revised version with selective sharpening.
Thanks to justcaree for her TopShot award.

Great concept and congratulations on your first ribbon. Another change you could try in your post processing steps is to not do any sharpening until after you size the image to 800 pixels. I don't know if your software has Unsharp Mask (USM) but if you do, here are a couple of settings you can use after you size the image.

Amount 100% Radius 1.0 or Amount 75% and Radius 0.75.

I find one of these two settings will work after I downsize my image.

This is almost so incredibly good. The pov, the lighting, the fog, the lantern. I can't put my finger on it. Perhaps the image is too noisy, and the lit areas are a bit murky? Maybe it's the reddish tone of the image, or a lack of contrast. I can't diagnose it.

Love the sepia tones in this composition. It gives it the feel and mood of a time long past - and for some reason it specifically makes me thing that this would be a great photo to include as a picture illustration in the classic pirates tale, Treasure Island. Love all the attention to details. The fog makes it appear as if he is emerging from the shadows and adds a bit of mystique and menace. Lighting is great for the lighting your subject from underneath always casts shadows on the face that makes it look evil;menacing. Details: costume is great and even the detail with 'missing teeth' strengthens the imagery of a nasty and dangerous pirate.

The pirate on the burning deck... great realisation of a really smart concept. Normally I would have mentioned that it doesn't seem that sharp, but here that adds to the 'early photo' type feel you have given it with the sepia toning. Great job. Ribbon?

Very grimy, very cool, though I think it's grainy to the point of appearing pixelated.
