Challenge: Thar Be Pirates (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Location: St. Catharines, Ontario
Date: Sep 18, 2010
Aperture: f/4
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/10

Date Uploaded: Sep 18, 2010

I decided I would make a trip to Jordan's Point to capture a sunrise photo of this Pirate ship. Since I work during the week, Saturday and Sunday were my only options. The weather for Saturday morning was listed as sunny, so I woke up at 5:15 to make the 1 hour drive. As I was arriving on site, the sky was the most wonderful bright yellow. I practically ran from my car down to the water in the darkness so that I would not miss it. After taking photos for about 30 minutes, I was ready to go home. I started to pack up my things, but then the colours in the sky shifted to this wonderful purple. The rest is history.

36 hours to go before the challenge starts and there are only 9 entries so far. I am a little disappointed because I expect this to do well and I welcome the competition.

This photo got rejected at 1x.com yesterday, which is both surprising, and frustrating to me.

Not just congrats on the ribbon(s) but congrats on a great picture. I was showing it to a non-photography friend to let him see what gets done here. Yours was a really good first look for him.

As for 1x - back in college a friend because an art major. After four years of study he finally gave me the definition of what art really was. Art is whatever you can get away with. They didn't like this, but seriously (and no sour grapes here) that is their loss. You can still display or sell this through different places if you wish.

Finally, if you do do the paper on the before and after please let me know. I would love to see it. I could learn a lot from you.

Well the Canadian contingent is out in full force at the Winner's Circle. I'm looking forward to a GTG to hopefully meet some of you brilliant photogs someday. Seems to me though that DPC is community without borders which is great.

I look forward to your editing notes on this great exposure and others, I'm sure I'll glean some knowledge.

Surprisingly no. I was just at the right place at the right time. It's and HDR from 3 images. As mentioned in my notes, I am working on a document that shows the original RAW files, and the editing steps involved. I'll keep you posted.

Way to go! I think Lake Ontario sunrises are the best in the world. I rented a cottage on Lake Huron, where "World Famous" sunsets are claimed, so I wouldn't have to get up in the morning. They're full of crap.

When I saw this challenge, I thought of this ship and knew one or more of your group would be there. :-D

Pretty colors and good choice on the wide perspective...

Coming back to leave comments. No sails on the masts, shallow looking water, and listing to the side makes me think that this ship has been abandoned. A sunrise symbolically signals a new beginning...perhaps this ship is not on it's last leg and will set out to the open seas again with a new pirate crew:-)... Lovely colors and detail in this photo composition. Love the reflections upon the water.

Just stunning and in my top 3. Beautiful colours, perfect lighting, great sky and composition, interest in the whole frame, including the foreground and also like the slight vinaigrette (sp). 10 and added to fav's. Really nice work.

Incredible clarity. The lens distortion adds an otherworldly dimension to this image. Love the soft colors, which also add to that dream feeling.

Good amount of detail here. Did you use HDR techniques to bring out the detail in the shadows? IF so, you did it well.

I love this picture! In the beginning I didn't like the dark corners, but still gave it a 9. Had a second and third look now and I don't care about the corners anymore, so it's a 10!
Do they ever use the boat or is it there to be pretty?

If this isn't Bear_Music, then it is certainly strongly in the same style. (Compliment!) Excellent colours and perspective - it really makes one want to be there - although I suspect in reality it is a little smelly...
