A quick photo of my dinner tonight 7/22. I had some chicken with it also but I didn't include that in the composition. It's unfortunate that I didn't have any fresh basil which this dish typically has as an ingredient.

Lit with one sb-800 flash in a medium soft-box just out of the frame.

First challenge using my new 60mm nikkor micro lens. I didn't specify a lens in the photo information because I hadn't added it in my profile yet.

Post challenge: thanks for the great comments Tim and Kelly

Beautiful lighting on this one, I hope this makes it on the front page. I'm not sure if I like the brown drips down the side of the white board, and the light reflection is a little distracting, but overall a very nice image.

That really looks appetizing. I wish the image was composed simpler.. The background with both wood and (stone?) is a little bit crowded.

Yum! This looks amazing! I love the use of the unsymmetrical background--very well done. The color palate is lovely too.

Looks yummy - my only negative would be that I find the reduction distracting. Perhaps if it was a neater swirl on the plate? All in all, good job!

OK - this is my take on the presentation of your plate. I would eat it ina second but your layout coudl be better. You have a cool square plate which could have been accented better had you curved the tomato and mozz. It comes up too far onto the edge and the straight line of the tom/mozz doesnt contrast with all of the other straight lines in the image. A curve would have been lovely. The balsamic reduction - had it been reduced down a bit more - could have been thicker which would allow for a cleaner plate design. The splatter just makes it look messy to me. And for a clean photo I would skip the black pepper. I know it tastes awesome but it just adds to the messiness. Something fresh and bright green would have been nice. A pair of chive sticks, a little chiffonade of basil. I am looking at this with eyes of a chef and a photographer. You have excellent components that could have been laid out a bit more pleasing,

Looks delicious, but maybe that balsamic reduction spatter would look even better if it was a little more controlled.

Nice food placement, very professional looking. I like all of the lines involved, it seems to add to the class of the photo.

The food looks good - hard to do!
What doesn't work so well are your angles. The cutting board is not quite evenly cropped at the corners of your frame and then the white plate is not quite a straight diamond in the frame. If you'd lined up the angles or pulled back a little so the corners of the plate weren't cut off, this would not be grabbing my eye so much.
