Challenge: Street Portraiture (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Canon EOS-40D
Lens: Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro DX
Location: Somewhere on highway 53 in Missouri
Date: Jul 3, 2010
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/125
Galleries: Portraiture, Rural
Date Uploaded: Jul 4, 2010

This guy sells what he grows off a trailer behind his truck. He sets up along the highway. When I asked for his picture, he was a little reluctant. Asking, "Why do you want to take my picture?" I explained the challenge, but he still seemed reluctant. Fortunately his wife stepped in with, "At least he asked... Everyone else just takes your picture."

While out and about, I did realize that I brought the wrong lens. I had the Tokina 12-24 mounted for an image I had in mind. But for people, it forces me to get a little closer than the subject may like.

Hopefully I did him justice. And the challenge, though much feared when announced, actually turned enjoyable and I look forward to doing street images just for fun in the future.

Thanks DPC for adding a new facet to my photography, I never would have tried it were it not for this challenge, and my team mates on the ViewFinders.

Good for you Alex for stepping outside the comfort zone. It's a good shot. Farmers just don't get no respect :D

The face is a bit soft, but overall it works. I like the unique point of view that shows us the fruits of his labor (pun intended). His stance and the expression say a lot too.

The detail in this image is wonderful, but I wish you had brightened his skin tone so it wouldn't be the same shade at the canvas behind him. His shirt also blends in with the food behind him. The overall contrast of this image is pretty good, but the contrast between the subject and the background is not there.
