The only reason I didn't go with the color was I felt the grey steps didn't go with the colorful poncho, but maybe that could have worked... It would have looked like the background was desaturated to grayscale. I do plan to go back and try this shot again in different locales, etc... I find the friend and the poncho quite photogenic :) Thanks for the tips!

This is one photo that I would prefer to see in color. I'm sure there are some nice colors in the outfit that we are missing out on. I think the composition is ok but what is bothering me the most is the position of the hat and the expression on your friends face. It's distracting the way that the part of the hat is covering his face. His expression looks unatural or posed. He looks like he is there only to be photographed. The steps are interesting, however I would have chosen a smaller aperture setting to try to blur the background more. I understand this is not possible with all cameras. The lighting seems pretty good, I enjoy the shadows on the steps. A lower camera angle while using some fill flash for the face might be effective. It looks like you have all of the right elements and with some work on the positioning of the person as well as some lighting adjustments this could be a real winner.

Just to elaborate on the shot if people are curious as to the subject.. The person in the picture is a good friend of mine, who this winter decided to outfit himself in Peruvian wear. He had bought his winter apparel a couple of weeks earlier, and on this day I was visiting my folks in Laval and he was sitting on the front steps. Its not exactly a stranger I ran into on the street, but I thought the photo would look like it could appear in a magazine or human interest story.

As to choice of B&W, I liked the contrast of the different textures much more in B&W than in color, apart from the fact that newspaper photos are often in B&W.

Thanks for all the comments!

Powerful image, good composition and content.
Let down a little by exposure/ contrast - it's just a bit too high for me.

Don't know what your title means so don't know how this meets challenge. As for the picture the little bit of snow makes you feel it is cold. Good cropping to include that. I would like to have seen the feet to see if they were bundled up for the cold too. Fingertips out of glove add to the photo. Good focus. B&W works here to make appear colder that color would have. Good choice. Photo tech look real good. Nice job on picture. Not knowing about meeting challenge can only give a 7. PTL

El sombrero distrae un poco la atencion. Se ve bien en blanco y negro.

B&W was a good choice here. I love the way it brings out all the patterns and details in the clothing. Very interesting picture though it might be even more interesting if he was doing something.

Shame that the person's face is obscured so much.

This is a great shot, but I think a more descriptive title would help the viewer see the link to a story.

This is very nice, it's also sad. Uno-One, alone. Is this Mexico, South America? I like seeing his clothes. The woven hat. Interesting shot with great texture, great feeling. Good eye. Justine

Great subject matter and the shadows to the right add great effect.

Good picture... not sure what the story is though.
