The original idea was to make a kind of draft for DEEP IMPACT poster, where the impact of the asteriod just make a splash in the ocean ...

When I showed that to my team, [user]tate[/user] fastly change the title to DPC IMPACT, and set the story about the "ultimate droplet image".

Making of:
Earth made from a mix of 3 textures, make a square and apply an optic distorition to make it round.
Lots of work on it, the different technics are mostly explained here : GIMP planet tutorial

Splash made from 2 shots : one with the front part sharp, one other with the back part sharp.

And classical drop trail from my tap.
