An interesting observation. There has definitely been a shift in your primary subjects since moving from Germany to California. Perhaps that is part of the issue. Perhaps you just need to "find your groove" to utilize a tired cliche. 5 1/4 is not a bad entry at all, it just missed the broad appeal mark and is a bit lower than you are used to.
This was also a tough challenge for many of us. Even DrAchoo only managed in the mid-5's, and left a remark on his own entry saying "Basic editing sucks". The combination of b/w plus basic editing made this one of the harder challenges, IMO. My own scores have been roughly in the same area as your own.

Deb..you finished reasonably well and the median vote of 5, the middle, so you grabbed a lot of folks, with score 6 a decent second, I think you're onto something. You have a great eye and your portfolio bears that out..so just keep shooting! I would miss your view of the world if you were to stop! |

Good tonal range, lovely sky, well processed.
Nothing wrong with it but my eye is drawn out to sea which makes it a weaker landscape for me. |

IMO your foreground is to much in my face...I want to see what is just over the hill and off in the distance more...it's like it's blocking the view |

This is GORGEOUS!! Such a beautiful scene that my eye sees it in color, even though it's B&W. Lovely! |
