Challenge: Pieces of the Human Form (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Olympus E-510
Lens: Olympus 14-42mm f.3.5-5.6 ED Zuiko Digital Zoom
Location: Colorado
Date: Jan 27, 2010
Aperture: f5.10
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/5
Date Uploaded: Jan 28, 2010

I shot this with my camera set up on a tripod on my kitchen table with my wife holding the cup. The lighting was the chandalier hanging above the table. I pointed the light in different angles and picked the one I liked best.

The only editing was some cropping and a little hue/saturation tweaking.

This is wonderful! I love the earthiness of it.

I wonder how it would look as a square crop... with the cup and hands centered... ?

Hi Kris, greetings from the Critique Club!

Welcome to DPC, I'm sure you will have loads of fun and improve at each challenge :)

Regarding your photo:

Concept
You had a very imaginative idea here, the overhead perspective really adds some angle to the photo, and make it different from most others.

Composition
I'm not sure, but I probably would like to have the subject centred, because you can still use the arms as lines in the photo, all leading to the centre of the picture.
I liked that you didn't have the arms straight, but coming a bit from above.

Lighting / Technique
The best part of the photo. The focused lighting on just the cup, the vignetting around the main part, and the softness of the light is very soothing, and does the trick very well.
The slow shutter speed also allowed the liquid inside the cup to swirl ever so slightly.

Processing
Probably here it was just a bit too soft. The lighting is very good, but the hands, fingers, and table top are a bit soft, could use with a little more sharpness and a little more texture. Some contrasting and levels could boost these things so you could have a more defined photo.

Overall
A very good start, and a 5.8 score is a very good number for this challenge, it's definitely above average.

Congrats on your entry, and hope you keep them coming!

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Regards,
Joao

I like the soft tones, the ripples in the coffee, and also the soft vignette that frames the subject. It just comes together nicely. Very well done.
