...why are you taking pictures of me? ...why am I so old? ...why am I so lonely? ...why am I going to die? ...why did I live? ...why?

Maria (that's her name) was sitting on a sidewalk in a little mountainous Mexican town Taxco. While I don't speak much Spanish, I spent about half an hour with her and was allowed to take a number of photos. She has an amazing face. Strangely, her intense inquiring gaze reminds me the famous afghan girl, by Steve McCurry, some untold years later...

What a gut wrenching expression.

I'm so in awe! Yes! Her face stirs the soul and inspires me. In my own love for capturing story telling faces, I have found that women are typically much less willing to be photographed than men. So seeing this makes me appreciate your work even more. There's something about her old old face that emanates a childishness too. Maybe the pouty lips -- something. But it's so beautiful seeing the contrast -- and the similarities of the aged and the young and innocent. And its one I'll remember long after clicking away to other things!

An evocative portrait which speaks volumes in Silence. Superb & eloquent capture. And do we have an Answer for the Question?

That's a face to be studied, she's certainly seen a lot as evidence in her face and eyes. The blanket adds so much, it's worn nearly as much as she is.

What character and history in her face. Perhaps a tighter crop would have emphasized the face even more. 8

Why the title? The face alone speaks volumes. Powerful image.
